Default D5 215 mpg?

Hi all.

I'm about to purchase an XC70 SE Lux with a juicy D5 215 engine. Obviously, buying a 2.4 engine means that I'm not too hung up about fuel economy, but I'm curious to find others experience.

My last car was a V40 with a 1,6 diesel, which claimed stupid mpg (80+), but I only managed 65 with careful and cosseted motorway driving (60mph).

This latest oil burner claims 40 urban, 49 extra and 41 average. how far out are these and what could I typically expect? Also, have you noticed whether using premium/super diesels help with power, responsiveness, economy or smoothness? They are typically 7-10p per litre more expensive than the standard at the pump, and want to weigh up whether to start using them for this bus.

Thanks in advance for your musings.

What MPG did you get on the motorway? Roughly what speed were you doing?

Geartronic should return high 40s on motorway if you keep it sensible (cruise on indicated 73). No difference noted with vpn+.

I have a 2016 XC70 and my average MPG is a fraction under 36.

I mostly drive on local roads and never drive on motorways - there aren't any motorways within 100 miles of where I live.

I have a 2008 v70 2.4 d auto

27mpg town and 40mpg max at 55mph with cruise control on!

It is poor to say the least! And I drive mine like it's always on fumes still drinks

Changing mind for a Mercedes blue tech as they will do 50-67mpg

I can get around 43mpg should have said mines the V70 which i guess is a bit lighter than the xc70. speeds 70 to 80 i usually stick it on cruise
I once read the 2k rpm is the optimal engine speed which equates to around 79mph.
someone no doubt will correct me

Just as I thought, mixed experiences. 2k revs and a bit of experimenting will be key!!

The problem here is that you have quoted figures from D5s but not all the 215 BHP, from reading the forums over the years the 185 one is the least fuel efficient something like year 2005 - 2010?.

I have the 215 engine in a V70 auto and find the following, urban cold engine you might get 25mpg, once warmed up that could increase to 30-35mpg. On a motorway at 70 you should see low to middle 40s mpg, if you start going above 70 then this decrease quite quickly. This assumes sort of average driving style, start to enjoy the power of the D5 215 and I am sure you could match the MPG of the T5 I had!
