XC60 and XC90 D4 and D5 powertrains now include Ad-Blue technology as standard and petrol engines in XC60, XC90, S90 and V90 (except T8 Twin Engine) have a Gas Particulate Filter. These technical changes are required to meet the latest Euro6 emission standards, and as a result CO2 outputs have changed (although some have gone up!)

Your vehicle will also not require the AdBlue fluid to be changed, so overall will save you money in the short term unless of course the government decide to start taxing vehicles based on NOx levels as well as CO2.
It might work in my favour not having a particulate filter, but I have to agree that it's a bit of bad planning buy Volvo to launch a new model and then upgrade engine emissions control within a few weeks.

I do not know what all the fuss is about. I also have just bought a new XC60 D4. It is Euro 6 compliant using LNT (Low Nox Trap) rather than SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology.

I suspect the change to SCR (Using DEF "Adblue") is to lower the NOX levels below that required for Euro 6 in anticipation of the forthcoming Euro 7 regulations.

I am happier not having the additional problem of "Adblue", cost, inconvenience etc.

The new MY 2018.5 cars will still just be Euro 6, because that is what the current requirement is.

Volvo Sweden has released the D3 with a standard 6-speed auto in the S/V90...lowest petrol is a T4 with 190bhp and 8-speed auto.

The manual (xc60) clearly states that the adblue freezes at -11°C which, it says, will prevent the engines from running.
Temperatures that low don't happen that much in the UK...but they do occur. (& a lot on Scandinavian countries)

Is there a solution?

i believe that Adblue tanks have a heater to prevent this.

This thread takes me back many years to when I was buying some Volvo 44 tonne FH12 tractor units with the then new Euro 5 engines and I went to Gothenburg on a factory visit. Adblue had appeared in HGV's at that time to meet emission standards and I remember a Volvo product engineer in Sweden explaining the virtues of this new technology.

A couple of worrying aspects were that if Adblue was allowed to 'run out' in the separate tank, the vehicle would go into 'reduced power mode', I wonder if this will be the case with SCR Volvo Euro 6 cars nowadays? Secondly, the cost of Adblue needed to be factored into vehicle running costs as it was used at the rate of around 3% of diesel usage, not a massive cost in running a car, but there all the same.

The amusing bit was when someone asked the engineer exactly what Adblue was? His reply was that it was a 'urea solution' and the closest biological comparison was pig's urine! I've since heard stories of lorry drivers in the UK actually p***ing into the Adblue tank when parked up overnight and none of them have ever broken down or had 'reduced power' problems.

I'm sure there's a moral to this story but it all depends how close you can get to the Adblue tank cap on a new XC60/XC90/V90/S90 without embarrassing yourself at the side of the road!

Hmmm... hope its a very good heater then and one that works off the battery.

One solid frozen 10litres of adblue is going to take some de-icing... I guess we will find out over the next couple of days with temps forecast to drop to -12°C tonight and -15°C tomorrow.

I'd bet though that if there is a heater it will only work with the engine running and so there are going to be a lot of stranded drivers whose engine wont even start to allow a heater to de-ice the chunk of iced ab, over the next couple of days.

It'll be fine. Ad-blue is used in Nordic counties too.!!
