Default Let there be light !

Put a new set of Phillips bulbs in Trigger tonight as I felt the old ones were quite yellowy. The new ones are a big improvement and should make a difference on unlit roads.

Couple of pics to show the difference

Default Belt Up !!

Another job ticked off today ! Timing belt and tensioner replaced today along with all front oil seals ( cam, intermediate and crank ) Also new alternator and power steering belt.

The adjuster for the alternator belt was seized up so that had to come off and freed up as it wasn't possible to adjust the belt properly.

Trigger is just about there mechanically now. All I have left to do is in tank fuel pump, fuel filter and cleaning/replacement of the oil separator box. I'm sure there will be something else like dizzy cap and rotor arm oh and possibly coolant temp sensor etc etc etc...........

So from getting a free car from a forum member ( thanks again Stuart ! )

I have replaced

Front discs,pads and calipers
Handbrake cable ( all for MOT )
Air Filter
Oil filter & Oil
NGK Plugs
4 Goodyear Vector all season tyres
Complete exhaust system
Fresh Coolant
Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
All front oil seals
Power Steering Belt
Alternator Belt
Heater blower motor
Headlight bulbs
Rocker cover gasket
Oil filler cap seal

I also fitted Egg Crate Grille and clear indicators

Add to that cleaning throttle body,Idle valve and all pcv hoses

Have to say I'm pretty smitten with the old girl

Few pics of her journey back

The Alternator belt and power steering belt look well worn. They are genuine Volvo so I'm wondering if they might have been on the car since new ?

The timing belt doesn't look that bad for 13 years old but it has only done 38,000 miles in that time. Tensioner is a bit rough but not knackered so I wonder if that could also be original

Nice to get them all changed anyway and with all front oil seals done it should be ok for another 100k

All of those belts were changed just in the nick of time!

If you look on the outside face of the timing belt you'll see a shadowy image of where the pulley teeth have been. I call this "ghosting" - it's a technical term but only in my dictionary!

Joking aside, it only appears on belts that are getting close to the end of their lives. I think (from memory) the interval on the red-block is 36k miles or 3 years for the timing belts. The time is important as well as the belts themselves deteriorate like all rubber products and the fibre reinforcing inside also stretches/gets weak. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

As for the tensioner, any roughness in them and change them! They can deteriorate rapidly to the point where they end up throwing the belt. Had that happen on a Mitsubishi about 15 years ago - the upside was it saved me from a weekend with the monster-in-law so it was all good!

Timing belt at a B230....
NOT at a B230H and B230K!!!

I put a new one incl tensioner on when purchasing a car.
i put a new one on when oil leaks apear, new front seals and timing belt incl. tensioner
Done, never changed one again

they are free runner, nothing happens.
36k or 3 years is a joke
100kmiles and 8 years they will last at minimum.
Neverever had a broken timing belt in a 8V Volvo with factory cam.

the alternator and power steering belt will break in front of he timing belt.
such reliable cars.
My one now with 350tmiles on the car, more than 400tmiles on the engine and 100tmiles on the timing belt.
My last 945 the timing belt did last even more than 150tmiles! Test car, a Deer and my Elk went in suicide together. That engine went into my 945 now!

16V bangers and the only two (B230H and B230K, with 631 and xyz head) are no free runners. Take care!

Griston: I would change the CPS soon, pick up a spare fuel pump relais, a spare ignition controler and a spare RSR. This are small parts and fit into the glove box.
I've never ever seen a clocked oil separtor box at a B230 Turbo engine. The small part on top of the tube with a Y conection will be clocked before.
Dizzy cap and rotor I will only use BOSCH, nothng else. Leads Bougicord are the ones.
Check the vibration damper on front of the crank carefully. They are prone to crack and slip.
good luck, Kay

Cambelt interval is 50,000 or 5 years. so mine was 8 years overdue

Default PCV Goodies

My day is sorted for tomorrow as all my PCV goodies arrived this morning

I thought I was getting a short piece of pipe that goes onto the oil separator but it comes by the metre !!

Are there any other bits of the same diameter ? Or have I got a lot of waste ?

Not much waste - instead of keeping the flame trap low down, move it up as high as possible - helps keep it clean! Did that with my last 740GLE, vast improvement in the running, economy etc and Volvo themselves did it with certain models (think it was only 2.0 turbos or 2.0 carbs, not sure which) - never worked out why they had the flame trap so low down where it could easily get oil contaminated!

If memory serves, it's 16mm bore so any spare will be handy for repairing heater hoses.
