Default Just bought a 940 diesel

Bought this the other day:

Paid £400; runs pretty well, and I already had some hubcaps.
Got a few niggles to sort out, fuel & temp gauges, rear shocks and the overdrive (manual box) only works when its cold.
If this doesn't respond to new fluid & a filter cleanup, then I'm considering swapping the gearbox for a 5-speed.
Question is, does anyone know if the bellhousing to gearbox bolt pattern is the same on the M46 box as the M47?

Hi,

Chances are the O/D solenoid is the guilty party.
Over Drive Rebuild...
Above may help in sorting the problem.

There is also loads of other useful info in the FAQ as well.

I think the bellhousing is unique to the diesel, it is a VW LT engine so don't think the redblock bellhousing fits. I stand to be corrected though.

Simon, correct about the bellhousing but i beieve the bellhousing is removable on the M's too (not the 5 speed M90 though wich is redblock and white block specific box) so you could swich over the redblock one for the diesel. same general idea as we did on the limo

1st off i vote for the OD selinoid relay, tall green one in the case of 940s. i used to hit mineor wiggleit to make it work lol also it would be worth cleaning the switch in the gear lever, check out the 700/900 FAQ for info on that, or your haynes manual.
2nd the wiring on the selinoid can get in a state, well with checking and cleaning the connector.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I think I will try to stay with the O/D. Seems they have taller overall gearing than the M47.

I have had a few 940 diesels. They are great! Just bought another one, almost broke and was looking at other options. Verdict every thing else (newer) is rubbish. Stick with the overdrive box as they are more readily available; stronger and give little trouble and the bonus of one clutchless ratio change should your clutch be inoperable which some times happens. Fuel gauges always seem to give trouble and any attempts at repairs seem to centre on a problem with the instrument cluster circuitry.

the clutch was changed some time ago ,and they forgot to tie up the wires that came through the housing , jack up the car , look to the left of the rear of the gear box over drive ,the two bars that hold the gear change .should have a bracket that holds the wires to the overdrive , make shure that they have not been cut ,pull the cover to cheack ,
