Default Fuel starvation?

My 850T5 has been doing two weird things for months now and I don't know if they're related.

1/ Run tank down to a quarter or less, fill up with fuel, pay and when I try to restart the car it does so but very reluctantly ie; I really have to hold it on the key as if there is very little fuel getting to the engine. Otherwise the car seems to run fine.

2/ Sit/crawl in traffic, usually M25 between A3 and M3, sometimes the lambda light will come on and stay on for maybe a day or two then go away.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Tony Flynn

Hi Tony.

Sounds like injectors, fuel pump or fuel filter to me.
Could also be your O2 sensors.

Use some redex to eliminate the injectors and then maybe get your fuel system checked.

redex is a waste of money as the injectors are self cleaning on shutdown, i used to use it myself for years!

See if you can pull any codes to see the whole picture.

I would change the fuel filter though as a matter of course cheap insurance, you want to see the crud in them! see link.
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/fuelfilter.htm

When you start her put it into key positon II for 5 to 10 seconds then fire her up. Make sure with the buzzing sound that the pump can be heard. Also this ensure you have the correct pressure for starting. If she doesn't start well, can hear the pump you may have a regulator problem.

Lastly one topic that does come up a lot is the fuel pump relay gain cheap insurance. i changed mine this year as i would get the occasional none starter and lamba light up.

If the Lamba is triggered you may get a code, but they are not triggered but faulty fuel pumps!

hope this helpes,

mark

Thanks guys, I know what I'll be doing next weekend, that fuel pump filter in the link looks really rough, I didn't know there was one there.

Hi Tony,

if i remember correct (i doubt it) but i'm sure the fuel filter is placed underneath the car by the rear axle (sorry can't find my Haynes manual to check)

Thanks, I'll get the old trolly jack out and crawl underneath this weekend, is this a main dealer part or is it more reasonably available?

Hi Tony,

looking though my folder the dealer quoted me £47.08 & that was to supply & fit the filter so it's not to badly priced.

sorry, i haven't got just the part number (see how much just to supply)

Hi Tony,

fuel filter is in front of OS rear wheel. German Swedish & French sell filter for £12 part no. is V12120

Very easy to fit, one small clamp bolt and quick release hose clips - use 17mm open ended spanner between filter body and hose end to push hose off filter. Be ready to catch fuel from filter and hoses as they come off.

Regards

Brian
