Hiya!
I was in the same predicament recently! Dealers normally use Casrol GTX magnatec or Duckhams QXR as far as i know, I put Shell Helix Ultra 5w 40 fully synthetic in mine to top up and has run perfectly! You can mix oils, i.e. synthetic / synthetic but wouldnt mix mineral / synthetic. It is 1 litre between min and max levels on dipstick. Hope this helps. Keith. |

When my V70 R AWD is serviced, and it has just been done, I supply my garage, Cambridge Volvo of Havant (5***** excellence rating), with Amsoil 10-40, which they are more than happy to use for me. 50k service, with a bill for just over £100 incl vat. including my VOC discount.

In my experience, I suspect the Volvo dealers use oil from whichever oil company they can get the best deal with at the time. My local dealer has, over the past 10 years, used synthetic or semi-synthetic oils from Castrol, Duckhams and Esso and possibly some others too. They are currently using Castrol again. I think it was the premium Castrol synthetic (SLM ? - can't remember without looking it up) that went in the sump at the last service a few weeks ago. I'm sure if you use the closest type to what's already in there you shouldn't go too far wrong.

I concur with Bob, use fully synthetic 5W-40; I don't specify a brand for my garage, but top up with Halfords which is fine.
