I think it's meant to say PCV as in pressure control valve, all of these valves can clog up over time but there are no issues inherent I am aware of with the 2.0 MZR Mazda engine.

Also it's worth noting you cannot get a petrol automatic V50 outside of the 2.4i and T5 engines over here, they didn't bring the 2.0i Powershift into the UK and as most of us here are UK based we may not be the best source of information but on the 2.0D they seem to be OK.

Yes wiring loom corrosion for the wiring in the doors is still an issue.

The plastics seem to be of a high quality so I shouldn't imagine there will be an issue.

No DIY fix for that?

New loom from Volvo is the only way, not expensive and quite straightforward to fit, happened on my S40

Thanks for the info. Wiki was pretty brief on the V50 series.

Were all the 2.4i turbo equipped? One of the shops here told me for a particular year (2009 in our market) Volvo offered a non-turbo 2.4i.

2.4i is a non turbo 170bhp 5 cylinder Volvo engine with Aisin Warner TF80-SC Geartronic auto box or a 5 speed manual up until 2007 when they gave it a 6 speeder.

T5 is a 2.5 turbo with either 220 or 230bhp depending on the age and is also a 5 cylinder Volvo engine with Aisin Warner TF80-SC Geartronic auto box or a 6 speed manual.

2.0i is a non turbo 145bhp 4 cylinder Mazda MZR (Ford Duratec) engine and uses the Powershift autobox in some countries or a 5 speed manual gearbox.

Those are all the petrol automatics Volvo used in the V50 that I know of

I had a 2.0d S40 and changed this for a V50 T5.

Clearly I knew that there would be vast differences in running costs, but to be quite honest, day to day, I really don't notice much difference.

Im getting 32mpg with my daily commute to and from work and other runs into town etc. On a long run I am getting high 30's and I'm delighted at that. It will only really drop as far as I can see if you are giving it the beans everywhere. I enjoy the car and fuel consumption isn't an issue. What will a 1.8 or 2.0 average......there can't be that much difference to what I am achieving.

Tax, I just squeeze into tax band K with the car being a manual. Auto's go into the next bracket. I'm £22 a month to tax it. My insurance went down when I changed to the T5.

I would seriously consider the T5 if you are looking for a petrol.

I currently get ~37 MPG on my 2.0 petrol engine. It will be interesting to see if this goes up after my TerraClean service in the summer (at 126K miles).

After looking at the Mazda 3 hatchback, the V50 is a better car in terms of legroom for the front passenger and the seats. The seats on the Mazda are hard.

Any advice for what to look for when buying a used V50 with a 2.0 petrol?

And how do I check the door wiring for corrosion? Is it only evident by removing the door panel?

For the powershift transmission what ATF does it use? Dexron?

Just re-awakening this thread, have put a deposit on a 2007 V50 2.0L petrol manual 93k miles FVSH (effectively), after going through 100 plus pages on this fine forum.

This is my first post, thank you to all the contributors for the V50 and other models in the family to date. Dare I say I'm avoiding the 1.6/2.0L diesels like the plague after noting just how common failures and excessive prospective costs if unlucky as the miles pile on!
