The s40 isn't sounding good

Had an issue with the exhaust manifold leaking recently, on inspection noticed two missing nuts around cylinder 4, fitted OEM nuts but unfortunately noise persists

Probably a stupid question but it has got oil in it hasn't it, as that sounds more like cam / lifter rattle to me.

Not at all, it certainly sounds like it but oils full and has low mileage

It probably sounds loudest around the 3rdish cylinder, front side... actually the coil sitting on the 3rd just replaced less than 100km ago, cheap chinese coil - hopefully it didn't just kill the engine

I have a compression tester somewhere here, will run a test when I find it

also no OBDII codes being reported atm

Have you tried putting the tip of a flat blade screwdriver on the top of the engine to try to narrow down where the tapping's coming from?

It might work

BTW re the OBD codes, with a reader it can show codes that are pending, but haven't as yet triggered the CEL indicator, but if you've tried that already then I'm not sure.

compression is 135 - 145 across the 4 cylinders, seems a bit low?

Maybe a silly question but is the gasket between head and exhaust good?

Sounds a bit like my 2.0T did. I thought it was missing nuts as it made a similar noise to when mine decided it needed 2 less nuts.

However, it was a knackered camshaft/possibly a damaged lifter. My car soldiered on for a year and a half before the headgasket went at 230k.

Has it run extremely low on oil at any point?

unknown, could be, id did leak when cold before but after replacing 2 missing nuts and torquing them down this doesn't appear to be the issue - even after adding the two missing OEM nuts the noise hasn't changed at all

have sourced a new gasket but get a feeling the issue lies deeper

yeah im slowing coming around to this idea, the oil looks in good nick but many moons ago i did crack the sump and leaked an awful lot of oil, could of resulted in premature wear... crankcase seems to have positive pressure as well

clarkey1984 also suggested this early, i think you guys might be right

If it were me I'd chuck a bottle of Wynn's finest hydraulic lifter treatment in it, for the tenner or so it costs it's worth a go, and certainly can't do any harm.
