V50 Engine 2.0D : - V50 2l TD 2007 misfire on cylinder 1 & 2?

Hi all!

Have a problem that is causing me to loose faith.
I'm not that mechanically savvy/experienced but have always worked on my own Cars learning as I go along from my own successes and mistakes.
The car seemed to be running a bit rough on idle and smokey on start up so I started some trouble shooting by disconnecting each of the injectors from right to left one by one. Unplugged the first (no 4) and engine cut out, fine. Replaced and it started again. Same with 3. Did this with 2 and 1 and now they're both not firing. When I was in the midst of it all the engine would start up (I'm guessing because it was still warm) tick over awfully of a while then cut out. After a while the battery died (needs a new one) so I disconnected hoping this may reset anything that blocking a signal to recharge and didn't put it back on for 3 days whilst I was doing other things. Roll on today I can't even get the thing to start up, the battery dies after after about 40 seconds of turning over so not got that much testing time.

How can I trouble shoot this further to work out what on earth I've done?

Hi Hank.

Do you have any experience working with diesel engines?

VIDA, Volvo's diagnostics tool, warns against unplugging the injectors with the engine running as this may cause them to be stuck in the open position and fill the cylinder with a damaging fuel amount. I hope this hasn't happened to your engine now.

To go on, I think you really need to replace the battery and obtain a working Vida/Dice diagnostics tool, or equivalent, so you can read out the codes that have been set and plan your next move from there, or have the codes read by a garage (The cost of this is almost the same as buying a Chinese knock-off tool).

Unfortunately, pulling wires and observing what happens isn't the best way to troubleshoot these cars that rely so heavily on computers.

Hiya Teddy.

Unfortunately getting it to a garage isn't something I can achieve, so falling short of calling a mobile mechanic out with the equipment to diagnose it I might well have to buy myself the diagnostic kit myself. Any you can recommend?

When you say damaging amount... what can excess diesel do?
i was going to pull the injectors today to see if there's something I can see or is this not something I can inspect and determine with the eye, would it be new injectors or them sent away to be refurbished? (Preferable since new injectors are like 40 thousand pounds)

My personal car is a v40 1.8 petrol 2002, would the diagnostic work on this also? Would make the purchase more worth while.

I bought a Dice unit from Aliexpress as that was the cheapest option for me, already having a laptop I could use for the diagnostics programme. The Dice is an interface that connects a pc to the car. I have seen posts on this forum with people selling Vida/Dice combos, laptop included, but I don't know if anyone is selling now. I'm sure it would also be usable with your V40 as it covers Volvos up to year 2014.

Damaging amounts of diesel would mean it fills up the cylinder and at some point the piston isn't able to move, in other words a hydraulic lock. This can cause multiple mechanical failures in the engine.

You can buy refurbished injectors at a cost of 3-4 times less than new. I was charged around £220 per injector when I had mine replaced last year. I wouldn't go that route until you know for certain that an injector or more are at fault as it still is an expensive part and might not be the cause of your problems.

Thanks for all the advise.
I just had someone come over and plug in and everything's golden!
Thankfully, as you said everything so heavly reliant on the computer, it was simply the injectors not communicating with the ecu after I was done mucking about with it. Quick swipe of all the faults and it's running again.
Just thought I'd let you know the outcome, thankfully I got considerably lucky, although I now want his £500 tablet Autel tablet for myself..
