Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the dash panel. I can't seem to understand Mr Haynes explanation where he refers to 'the bright trim to the right of the panel' and on the 'left, the screw which is visible in the glove box' !!! Just how long is "that" screw supposed to be, a metre or so???? I've read somewhere where another forum member said 'it just popped out' but they didn't say how. The problem I find with Volvo is that if you really know, its great just 'snapping' out the fittings........if you don't, all broke
And whilst talking about the glove box, is the light bulb a special one only available from Volvo? The bulb doesn't seem to want to separate although I haven't pulled too hard.

thanks in anticipation

inside, near the glass,u will see a small oblong slot on each side, push a small flat edge into the slots and pull the metal surround off first, then u will a couple of small hex screws holding the actual cluster in place

You need quite a small screwdriver to push in those holes at the side, and you have to try to pull it towards you at the same time, you'll know once one side starts to move. The cluster is held in with 4 torx bolts but before trying to remove it, take off the metal spring clips to avoid scratching the clear plastic!

Default Thanks - Glovebox bulb

Thanks to you all, I will be out tomorrow and attempt to remove the cluster --just in time I hope, I'm trying to retrofit an outside temperature gauge..

but has anyone got an answer for the glovebox bulb ?? Should I be pulling a little harder ??

Great info though, many many thanks..

Default Which socket?

Ah, dashboard removed, thanks folks. I have another question though. I'm trying to retro fit an ambient temperature gauge but I don't know which or where the socket is to plug it into. I've found 1 socket which is black, but only has 4 connectors (blade type) but the plug has 5! Also, shouldn't the wire colours match up?
Appreciate any thoughts please, I have the dash out and i don't have wiring diagrams for the car, a 1997 940.

There are two very similar looking ambient temperature gauges. The ones from later 960s have a black connector and the ones for 940s a white connector. They are not readily interchangeable as the connectors are different. A 1997 940 should be pre-wired with the white connector behind the dash, probably taped back with masking tape. If your gauge has a black connector then you may be out of luck.

Of course, you'll also need to fit the sensor in the front bumper. Again, the cable should already be in place with a plastic cover over the two-pin socket.

Another tip - check the bulb in your new gauge is working before you reassemble the dash - been there, done that!

Default Ambient Temp Gauge

Thanks Forest, that's very interesting. My gauge has got a black connector but I haven't found the white socket behind the dash. I looked for anything that could have been taped up but nothing yet. I've assumed that there should be one as I certainly found the sensor (which I have fitted) cable taped up by the horns. Hmm, by the sound of it, I have a problem!
