Hi ShadeTek,I never actually found phisical evidence of a short, thats probably what was putting the 12v on the wire.Chris recons that shorts can be pinhole size, the mear fact that i disturbed all the wires when removing the engine loom(not a job for the faint hearted)and re wrapping it probably cured it,perminantly i hope. I also ran the two wires from the Crank Sensor in there own plastic conduit,so they wouldent get interfearence from other wires.

Andy, being a bit of an old wuss,i had to walk away from my son (who was round at the time)when she started up,thought i was gonna winge.Must have been the years tension comming out. Then a clenched fist and a great yes which my long suffering wife (and half the street)heard.
Only the Alarm to fix now.

After many months of testing,it has turned out to be a 12Volt feed to The Crank Sensor, when there should only be a feed of 1/2Volt approx.I took apart the whole of the engine compartment wiring loom and re wrapped it to find the fault. This has ended up Frying the ECU's three times.Fortunately I have been able to repair the ECU's myself (i have 2).
I would publicly like to thank Chris Rogers for his unstinting support and help in sorting out the problem,i think the total count of p/m's between us is running at 60 (thats just my inbox).Chris has not only given me great help on diognostics but all so even helped me into interprating Multimeter readings,he has the patience of Jobe.
Chris your a STAR .
Moral of the story is dont give up.Ask someone on the forum to help, its allways forthcoming.Long may it continue.
Kindest regards to everyone for their input and a spcial thanks to Chris.Regards to you all.
Aye well done, lesson to all, check voltage to and from suspected sensors.
we had dozens of loom problems and fires with VW passats, golfs, ventos 1993 to 1999 . Just as they moved the production of the looms to the former eastern block country the build quality nosedived. Usually the glow plug feed would end up at the ecu, frying the triple layer circuit board.
About 1 in 5 we could save with the help of a military circuit board specialist from Marconis in Dalgety Bay sneaking them in on nightshift for a bit of "homer" work. Inbetween building anti tank mines !!!

She's still running perfectly, started every day.Going to get her new MOT end of Feb,couple of little jobs to do before then, waiting for the hot weather to start.
Old "Hectors" running well but may be too gready to keep, will be sad to see him go.

Just to let you all know, she's back on the road as from 1/5/2011,took a bit longer than i thought.Love the sound of that booming exhaust, just a slight wheel wobble at 70mph(wheel balancing)otherwise perfect. Now the hard bit, what to do with "Hector the 960?

Default Rewrapped where?

Toplight,
I've appreciated this thread, thank you.
I'm having the same sort of difficulty. I'm wondering how far you rewrapped the wiring. Just from the Sensor to the "loom?" (the wiring encased in the hard plastic that the sensor connection comes out of) or did you go all the way to the ignition?
