240 rust question
Hi All,
I have seen a 90 240 GL 2.3 on ebay for 2500 which looks clean, but the owner says it has some rust around the windscreen cowl area. He sent through some photos and the rust looks to be on the firewall. Is this a potential nightmare to solve? Engine out job? Or can it be left? Thanks Chris |

It all depends if you work on your car or not.
You’ll have to remove all the trims and accessories in order to understand the extent of the issue. And you really want to know what is the damage water made behind it. 2/3 Hours of work. Might need engine out (but that is a 2 hourS job). You ll need to cut and weld after. |

I've never seen rust there on a 240 -- often it's around the windscreen. I wonder if that was a result of letting the drainage get blocked up for a long time?

The rest of the car looks clean, but it was the rust that was a concern and due to the placement whether it would kill the car or could be a bodge job for a number of years.
It has the 2.3 engine but mated to the auto box which was another thing that wasn’t ideal as preferred a manual. In no rush, so will give it a few weeks and see if the restrictions get released and I can go and visit it. |

The AW70 auto box works well with the 2.3 engine. If you want a firmer feel to auto gear changes it can be swapped out for an AW71L.

Four out of five of our 240s* were automatics, all four of our 740s, our 940 and now my V70 is likewise. *The odd one out was my 245GLT, which was MOD, but also a very 'drivable car. Regards, John.

Yes that is good. My only auto was a 16 valve 2.3 740 and it served me very well indeed. I wish I still had it today. . |
