Default V70 D4 2.0L 5cly Auto Optimum speed vs Fuel Consumption

The onboard computer over the last 5,000 miles has me at an average of 47.4mpg at 32mph. Though no idea of the accuracy on how this is measured.

Any ideas on what the speed to set in cruise control on the motorway for optimum fuel consumption. I have seen around 63mpg at 58mph on the flat.

Also optimum speed vs consumption on a flat road. The autobox engages sixth gear around 47mph as I remenber.

reset all counters and drive at 55 mph this should give you a good indication on the motorway of what your car can achieve

I agree. I think that all Volvos are geared to do this, which corresponds to the Swedish overall speed limit of 90 K/Hr. Many years ago, we took our 244, which regularly returned 23 MPG at home, to Sweden. It amazed us by returning 30 + driving between Gothenburg and Uppsala, a journey of 300 miles, at a near constant 55 MPH. This was calculated not by computer, but from brim to brim fill ups.

On our return to the UK we were back to 23. As 'Simmy' says, we found it to be the optimum speed for maximum economy.

Regards, John.

There were different gear ratios for different models and years. Like our two XC70, one 2012 and one 2016, they don't have the same ratio in the final drive.
The gearboxes are similar, six speed TF-80SC and TF-80SD. But the older does 107 km/h at 2000 r/min, the newer 115 km/h.¨

Optimum speed for lowest consumption is between 80 and 90 km/h.

The gear ratio difference comes from that the max towing capacity for a V70 AWD back in 2012 was 2000 kg, but for the XC70 AWD it was 2100 kg. That was due to slightly lower gear ratio. But in 2016 they had changed that to achieve better fuel economy, and threw the towing adaption in the dustbin.
