Got a price from Volvo main dealer in Ireland of €636 + vat on an exchange basis. (new volvo unit)

I was expecting it to be much more expensive.

Thats a very cheap price from a maindealer, does that include fitting and all the (you must also replace parts.....)....

I just renewed mine by getting a new core from a UK company for about 200 Euros delivered and fitted it myself, it is a bitch to do but if you want to talk to me about it get in contact (pm an email address).

My car is still not 100% due to sensor faults that I cannot sort out but it feels really powerful and is very quiet with new tappets and rockers... 297k kms .

you can get a second hand turbo over here for about €250

There is a firm in Dublin that do rebuilds and supply new cores ( I did not know about them until last week) a new core is essentially a new turbo without the actuator but these can be rebuilt I am sure.

I think what has happened mine is (the usual) VNT vanes get clogged up and jam, which in turn fecks up the cog wheels in the actuator unit. The 700 is just for the turbo (on an exchange basis) and I also need a T-MAP sensor which is about 100 yoyos.

A Volvo tech is fitting it for me as a nixxer, I recko I should be good for about €1200 all in!!

That's not bad, I've been quoted €1200 + vat for the turbo from the Garrett distributor in Dublin (API)

that actuator must be bolted or rivetted on. Get an electronics repairer to fix it.

Working on turbos is a pain as they are so awkward to get at, car is off the road for ages. Might make sense to get a rebuilt turbo. DIY rebuilding doesnt make sense as the rotating part needs to be balanced.

A mate of mine bought the cheapest turbo he could find off ebay. Sold the car. Trouble is he sold it to another mate, weeks later guess what - the turbo failed. All had to be done again, properly, ££££. Should have taken one of the cheeky low offers a taxi driver made, or fixed it properly in the first place

Yeah, the Volvo tech had it plugged into VIDA and identified that the T-MAP was goosed and needed to be replaced, he thought this was causing my boost problems until he took the car for a drive and realised that the turbo was actually goosed as well.

I can't have the car off the road for more than a couple of days. I also plan on putting another 200,000kms on this car so the brand new turbo will probably work out cheaper in the long run.

Do you think your Volvo tech would run vida on my car and give me an idea what might be wrong with it.

It might be worth the trip to Naas/Dublin, or where is he based.

He's based in between Kilcock and Summerhill. He works from home so it's evenings only. I should be talking with him tomorrow, I'll ask is it ok to pass on his number.
