S80 13 Pin socket help
Hi All,
I've bought a brand new Volvo detachable tow bar and 13 pin socket kit from my local dealer today. (Made by Thule) Bargain at £250 all in !!! Anyway.... I'm just studying the instructions before installing it all - the tow bar is simple and so are the electrics as they simply plug in. However, there are a couple of questions on the wiring: 1. The instructions list what pins 1-13 do. 2. They say that 11 and 12 are not used 3. Cables 11 & 12 are present, but not connected to the connector block and are dangling free with exposed wires 4. The instructions say that if I want to use charging and/or the fog lamp then I need to connect the "blue" cable to connecter number 1,5 or 12 on the connector block, depending what function I want (1=Charging, 5=Fogs, 12 Reversing lights) The strange thing is, positions 1,5 and 12 are already taken up by the cables coming from the pins. So am I right in thinking that I don't have to worry about this "blue" wire. Which by the way doesn't exist in the 13 pin socket kit. FYI - I also bought the relevant relay kit to provide the Fog lamp and charging functionality - these kits instructions also refer to this blue cable to the connect to ports 1,5 or 12. And the relay kit for the charging part comes with the blue cable. I'm baffled. Any ideas??? The instructions for it can be found here: http://vccs.volvocars.se/accessories...f-61122f72c8d5 Tris Last edited by TristanC; Aug 14th, 2009 at 23:35. |

i would say that part of the instruction is left over from 7 pin socket instructions , as you have a 13 pin then all 3 functions will be at the towing plug on separate pins already.. You say you dont have a stray blue wire at the car end of the loom? All the wires are white arent they?
If you have a fridge you WILL need to earth Pin 11 , for some reason Volvo never wire up a fridge in this country .. That goes for dealer fitted tow bars too , they are wired to volvo UK Standard .

Thanks both.
The PDF is actually the printed instructions that came with the kit. Page 5, picture 13 shows the connecter block at the car end and only 5 cables attached. Then page 10 item 13 talks about the blue cable. Clan - Yes all the wires are indeed white, which is why the mention of a blue wire confused me. - But in one of the relay kits there is a small length of blue wire with a spade connector - I assume this would insert in to the car end of the loom if I had the 7 pin plug as you suggested. I'll earth the 11th pin wire then, sorted. But what about the 12th pin? - Just tape it up I guess? Thanks for the help chaps Tris |

Well I fitted the detachable towbar and 13 pin electrics on the weekend.
What an absolute pleasure to install!!! - Honestly, it was so easy. All the wires were installed for all the functions and I tested them all and all worked perfectly. - Just "plug and play" I haven't yet grounded the 11th pin yet though. Tris |
