First step
Bon jour, Cleaning the ETM would be your first step anyway. Are you getting a Check Engine Light (CEL)? If so get the codes read. Xemodex, a Canadian company, can rebuild your ETM if need be. Kira

If the only symptom is a rough idle then it IS worth cleaning as it's gunk around the butterfly valve thats the main contributor.
Might be worth checking for the s/w update and seeing if you can find how much mileage your current ETM has done. If it's the original part, it WILL start playing up at some point. |

I'd be tempted to take the ETM butterfly valve out of the equation first by cleaning it and resetting your CEL (If the idle problem persists, you may have to pursue other avenues such as the MAF sensor).
If your idle problems are resolved but you still get the CEL then its time to get the codes read and go from there. If memory serves, the s/w update for the ETM helped to prevent the limp-home mode issue by preventing a default throttle of 0 (which happens when the tracks on the ETM pot wear through), instead defaulting to last known value, thus alleviating to some degree, the drivability symptoms. There are a couple of really good articles out there on the web - if you're interested, I'll dig the links out. HTH |
