Question ABS Service Required

hi all
I had the ABS/Traction warning light come on the dashboard and abs service req on the DIM panel on my 2000 XC70.spoke to mechanic friend he suggested it could be a wheel sensor.he checked it out with a code reader and he was right,no speed signal on LHF abs speed sensor,i priced one up £67 quid all in but before i purchased it i decided to clean faulty sensor.so jacked up car and took off lhf wheel and as i did i heard a bolt hit the floor and it was the hub retaining bolt so i cleaned it and put it back in at specified torque and cleaned speed sensor and put wheel back on.drove car and after a couple of mins all warning lights and message dissapeared.
i wondered if anyone else had problems with hub bolts,i was very shocked to think a critical part like that could work loose....

Hi,

Yes, this happened to me last year. Main stealer said it was quite common (he had a load of them on the shelf!!). I replaced my bolts with the XC90 version (rubber cone on the shaft) after reading up about it on the forum.

Hello!
There is a known issue with the ABS modules on cars produced before (and) 2000.
If all the other system are ok, you will need to rebuild the cold splice from the control module.
There are company's that can do this... or if think it's expensive, you could try to rebuilt splices yourself or... a skillful friend.

Good luck!

Hi Scott,

No problems at all since I changed them for the XC90 bolts (front only). I got them for nothing from the dealer because they messed something unrelated up when they did some work on the car. I think they are about £15 each.

Question

Hi
I am experiencing something simular, this weekend I had the ABS service message plus brake assist service message, but it comes and goes, the system still seems to be working, I have carried out a quick visual check and decided that the discs and pads could do with changing, wonder if this will rectify problem.

Default ABS ring

Just had the "ABS skid control" christmas tree lights on the dashboard, ppc told me it was front left sensor, took out sensor and saw it had been abraded at the end, quick look at the toothed ring on the driveshaft revealed it was so corroded it had split. Need to order a ring tomorrow, looks like it should go on without having to completely remove the driveshaft, think my hub bearing is grumbling a bit too, no play in it yet though.
Still what are weekends for?

Hi
This may sound silly but where would I get hold of a code reader, and what would I expect to pay.
