How do i replace my fan belt in a 87 240dl

Hi, you need to loosen the alternator to get the belt off. First loosen the top bolt on the slider holding the front, top end of the alternator. Then turn the long adjuster bolt at the end of the slider to move the alternator enough to get the belt off.

That should be it really but it's a bit difficult to explain without pictures. When you have the new belt on use the adjuster bolt to tighten first till you have a few millimeters slack, then tighten the main bolt that holds the alternator.

If you have power steering you need to similarly swing the steering pump enough to remove that belt first.

The little adjusting bolt on the alternator (and power steering pump) may well be seized up, if not already sheared off. If still intact, it is worth taking a lot of care to free it up. When working it makes adjusting the belts a joy, compared with old method of trying to lever with a screwdriver at the same time as tightening the clamp bolt.

Make sure you get a matched pair of bets (are yours double?) with the correct V profile. Volvo belts are matched, Halfords aren't.

Are you sure the PS belts is forward of the fan belts? I don't recall having to do that but I'll have a look later.

You need to tighten up your fan belts a bit...

Hi,

You would be advised to get and change the oil pump belt too..
Not any more difficult and gives you new belts on both sides..

EDIT: Just forgot if you do have AirCon then you may as well change that belt too.
Not sure if there is a need for "matched" belt on the 240's as you don't have a pair of belts to one component, do you??

I agree with Des, it would be good practice to replace all the belts at the same time.
