Default Stranger Registering my XC60!

Hi guys, just thought I would put this out there in case anyone else has had similar experience and as a word of warning.
I received a DVLA letter on Friday stating they have 'received an application from someone else as the registered keeper!'
Worrying and puzzling - I shall be speaking to them on Monday to relay I am not surrendering ownership!

You are only the registered keeper. I'm not quite sure how you establish ownership in the UK as the V5C quite clearly states "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP".
Also if your car manufacturer provides a Digital Service History they also include the above statement.

Who does own your vehicle ? If it's you, how do you prove it ?

Sounds like there may be a clone of your car out there. How long have you had yours ? It may have been spotted and the number plate given to a bogus vehicle.

A clone type scenario seems to be what maybe going on though not sure at this stage. All very weird.
I have owned the car for 6 months and bought privately from an insurance fraud investigator who purchased from new.

It is worrying if the V5 isn't prove of ownership. Where do you go from there!

Is it all moving to e-ownership with tax discs now defunct as well......

Proof of ownership comes from proof of sale, trouble is how do you know if the person you purchased it from has legitimate claim to actually sell it? It's a potential minefield!!

Not really a minefield. If you're buying used, you just carry out a HPI check which also carries insurance to protect you against situations like this.
Costs about £20.

My ex-neighbour had similar a few years ago with a car that she had purchased and that she had a sales receipt for. It turned out that the seller had used the car as security on a loan upon which he had defaulted after the car was sold and the as the loan company actually had a lien the sale to my neighbour was in effect fraud.

The loan company offered to sell the car to her if she cleared the debt and after a lot of legal arguing she settled at a much reduced amount.

Let's hope that there isn't something in the background of your car and that it is simply an attempt to steal the identity. I am sure you will resolve the issue, we will all be waiting for the positive result and explanation from you.

The use of the word minefield was maybe the wrong word to use but either way there is the potential for a lot of hassle when having to make a claim regarding ownership even with a HPI report, also as lloydy states what about if the car is cloned afterwards?
