I have a 1988 40 GL manual and £20 would get me 140 miles if I drove very steady (always keeping revs low) . . . . not the cheapest I've owned but for the size of the car and engine, it's acceptable IMO

Changing the gearing has no effect on the speedometer or mileometer, unless you have an earlier car with a mechanical speedo connection to the gearbox.
The electronic sensor picks up crown wheel rotation, which is the same as axle. |

I'm finding that new Shell Fuelsave petrol has upped my mpg to 36-38 on long motorway runs on my 240GL. Also from recent MOT's on my 1988 240 and 1996 Jag XJ6 emissions have been noticeably reduced on the previous years tests. I had been running on Vpower since it came in but the lower octane fuelsave if anything runs better.

Roughly 1.4 metric tonnes / 1400kg / 3000lbs depending on spec and saloon/estate. Not as heavy as you'd think, especially compared to modern cars (although they were definitely a heavyweight at the time).
Bear in mind, axeman, you may well have one of the few vehicles ever made that's LESS aerodynamic than a volvo estate! |

240 GLT 2.3 Manual, just completed 2 runs this week on Shell Vpower.
243 miles 2 up plus 3 Greyhounds (about 100 kilos) plus suitcase satnav speed med to high 70's got 29.20 mpg. 255 miles 2 up higher speed low 80's got 28.56 mpg. I have run other cars on ordinary and then Vpower and reckon I get a smoother run and a bit better economy to offset the higher price. Interestingly my guage reads 3 quarters full when actually full and when halfway through the red zone I estimate 4 gallons left. Still getting used to it. Wonder what mpg I would get on LPG? Rusty.

LPG gives the equivalent of 38mpg from 27mpg petrol on a B200E 245
Dutch Groot system converted 10 years ago. Starts and runs on gas. BrianH |
