Default Engine number location.

Hi I have a 1989 240GLT and have been asked by the DVLA for the engine number. Where is the location of the engine number? They got me slightly worried with their letter, so I phoned them and it turns out someone had requested another V5 for the same car. It sounded from what they said to me like the previous owner thought She had lost the V5 before She sold it to me and had re applied and then found it!! He said it sounds in order!
Thanks James.

Hi James. On the 740, the engine serial number and engine part number are on a sticker at the top of the timing gear cover at the front of the engine. On red-blocks, the engine part number is also cast into the engine above the distributor. It's probably the same for the 240.

Hi thanks for your reply. I had a good look and there is a number stuck to the cam cover. Is this the engine number? Mine is a red block engine and I have the engine with the distributor at the front (B230E) and there are no numbers above the distributor. If the engine number is to the side of the engine next to where the distributor at the rear could be then the number thats cast into the engine is covered by the fuel inlet/injection equipment. Thanks James

Hi James. I found this picture using google images. It shows a sticker on a 940 B230E engine. As far as I know, the number 1289415 is the part number, and the number 1316 is the serial/production number.
I remember from previous posts that your car has the distributor mounted at the front of the engine. The other number on the engine that I was referring to is just the engine part number - the same as on the sticker. From memory, it is either cast into the engine or stamped on a plate somewhere near the thermostat. This is where the number is located on 740 B200/B230 engines - I was guessing that it is the same on the 240.

Hope this helps a little.

William

Is the serial/production number the engine number as I do have that sticker on the cam cover? There is a number stamped into the alloy head just above the thermostat housing, is this the engine number? Many thanks. James.

Well, to me 'engine number' could mean engine part number, engine serial number or engine type. Using Volvo's own terminology, the 'engine type' is B230E - perhaps this is all the DVLA are asking for? Now that you know all three numbers you could write back to them and let them decide which one they need. I didn't realise the DVLA held information with as much level of detail. I would have thought that the VIN would be sufficient for identifying the car. You could give them the VIN too.

I found my Haynes 240 manual this evening (I've never owned a 240 by the way). Taken from Haynes, page REF-9,

The diagram then (badly) shows that the number is located above the distributor and below the thermostat.
But, as I said before, it's probably best to give DVLA all the numbers you have.

Hi.

I think that as you say send all of the numbers with a letter detailing where I found them on the car. They have the correct VIN number, Reg and colour, model and trim level on file already, but want it all again!! Including the engine number. Many thanks James.
