When you are outside the car and standing at the rear with the engine running it would be normal to hear the pump running. If you are inside the car with the engine running you can probably hear the pump running if you 'listen for it'. When I turn my ignition key from off to run I can hear the pump run for a couple of seconds as it goes through its prime cycle. Once I start the engine the clatter from the B20E pretty much drowns out any pump noise.

I am using the Nissan reproduction of the original Bosch 2 port pump and it is definitely quieter than the Bosch pump so that colors my preceding comments. The thing that you need to watch for is a change in the pump noise level. If the noise from the pump suddenly increases that is typically a sign that the end is nye. However, given your exhaust rattle issues check to make sure that the body of the pump has not come into contact with the body of the car. That will transmit a lot more vibration to the car body which will act as a sounding board for the pump. In the OEM pump arrangement the pump is mounted in a circular clamp and the clamp is fixed to the pump enclosure (this varies slightly by year and model) by two rubber cushions which isolate the pump body from the car body. Make sure that the cushions are intact and that the pump body is not touching anything.
