So on YP09 it seems very odd that it has failed the last two mot’s on worn front brake pads, but only done 14k between them? Other than that, nothing unusual.

As for YT07 I think the last mot tester was extremely fastidious noting the engine and sill covers so I would be less concerned about the advisories. Very odd it needed a trackrod end at 20k, but again no red flags. Worth double checking the propshaft joint as that can be tricky to do...

Like for like cheaper so the opportunity for war chest accrual. The R class in particular is ridiculous vfm for something the size of an aircraft hangar. Hyundai reliability would be better, I'd suggest (certainly that was my firm view when I researched them, but we decided to keep the XC 70) Tows 2000+kg, as do they all.

Just musing on options for the OP, there's no obligation, of course, and you, he and others will form your own views, but whatever the outcome, it's only sensible to keep some cash aside when buying a large, heavy complex car, lovely as it is. Eyes wide open and all that...

As an owner of an xc90 myself be under no illusion should they go wrong they are major money.

I would not buy at all if the thought of a 2k bill is of concern.

I bought mine with 60k on the clock, full history (pampered in Volvo dealers all its life) and a full Volvo Selekt inspection.

Within 3 months the haldex unit had issues. Volvo repaired immediately without issue as it was under warranty but they can be costly.

How much more complex are they compared to my V70? It's the same engine. Appreciate all the advice from everyone

Iv been happy enough with the v70. It's had it's issues and work done, gearbox, wishbones, swirl flap etc.

It's another reason why I want to stick with Volvo. I'm familiar with the D5 euro engine and I like it

I think the issue is he needs a 7 seater that can tow larger loads well... so his choices are very limited to either a 7 seat 4x4 -or maybe a people carrier type.

I can recommend the LandRover Discovery (3 or 4) for that. Tow whatever you want, even busses.
