Update: Fixed!
Long story short, there was no power to the ECM. The wire providing the ground for the ECM power ("system") relay coil (which, perversely, goes to the ECM!) was broken. Sneaky, because you can only check for supply voltage at the ECM when it's plugged in (via back-probing). Replaced the wire, and it fired right up. No sign of any damage to the loom, and I don't know (yet) exactly where the break is. I spoke with a friend in the trade, and he said that lots of modern cars (he was particularly complaining about VAG stuff) has ever-thinner wire everywhere, and this wire was very spindly. I replaced the intercooler-outlet-to-throttle boost pipe at the beginning of December, so it's possible it got stretched then, and finally gave up a few weeks later. cheers James
