Default Engine system service required.

Hi all.

For the last week, Im getting the folowing message on my 2009 Volvo S40 2L diesel:

'Engine system service required'. Appreciate it if anyone can tell me if this is an MOT failure? The engine management light itself never comes on, just this message pings up, then dissapears again, then comes on again, non-stop basically.

My local mechanic hooked it up an said it is an issue with the accelerator pedal sensor. Its up for MOT this Sunday so panicking a bit!

Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't fail if the engine management light isn't on.

Can anyone recommend a good auto electrician in Northern Ireland to properly diagnose this issue. I've been to the same mechanic 3 times within issue, and he keeps coming up with different reasons each time I visit him. This warning light is driving me mad.

What were the possible causes that the mechanic suggested, and did he give you a printout of the stored fault codes at all?

If he isnt using "vida+dice" then dont bother going back
very VERY few aftermarket systems can PROPERLY read volvo's esp dieseils
Find yourself a Volvo main dealer OR volvo indipendant near you With VIDA+Dice,
it WILL save you ££££££ and stop the message driving you bonkers,

carry on using the same mechanic, you Will end up paying to have parts replaced that didnt need it,, you've already had 2 more bills than you really needed to

This is why I always tell people not to buy the peugeot 2.0d or 1.6d engines and go for the volvo engine D5 instead.

Its just not worth the time and the effort messing around with their constant limp mode problems that a lot of mechanics can't quickly fix. There is no point buying a Volvo if it has a peugeot engine fitted imho. All you're getting is a premium badge but with an unreliable engine.

If I were you, I'd get the accelerator issue fixed then sell it.

Just out of curiosity, when did you get the car? Sounds an awful lot like my old S40 that I traded in.

It's not a red R-Design is it?

The car suffers from some loss of power when the engine system service required warning comes on. Doesnt go into limp mode but definite loss of performance

They are fault codes relating to the little sensor attached to the side of the battery.

It'll either be;

The sensor itself
The wiring on the plug to the sensor
The rubber piping from sensor to DPF has failed. This can become brittle.
