That's where mine lives

I've done away with locking wheel nuts on all my other Volvo's ( The P80 V70 ones were dreadful ) so may do the D5 next as it lives in the garage, so hardly likely to get the alloys nicked

Plenty on Ebay. Search for "Locking Wheel Nut Bag".

I agree with not bothering with the locking wheel bolts. Unless you have some very unusual and very expensive custom alloys, stealing alloy wheels is not a particularly prevalent crime these days as most cars seem to already have alloy wheels of one sort or another.

Check the oil,
Top up the washer fluid,
Check the tyre pressures,

Fuel up and go!

I would put 100% confidence in the car, But then again- You'd be checking the above weekly anyway!

With it being winter, put another 5L of washer fluid in the boot.

Unsure why you would be carrying oil though, If you kept on top of maintenance, you wouldn't need to top up with oil. I know my engine is oil tight. Uses nothing between changes.

RE: Carrying a L of Oil and coolant on a long journey. Not really necessary. Just my personal choice. If something came up, it may get you out of trouble, quicker than waiting for the AA. As far as I know, the electronic alerts only tell you when the levels are on minimum by which time you need to do something. Also, long journeys tend to exacerbate any potential maintenance issues, two of which are the beginnings of oil or coolant leaks. Brake fluid level is another one I tend check regularly, but I wouldn't bother carrying any of that. I can't get used to not having a temperature gauge where you can see a potential problem before the thing boils over. I always used to drive gently until everything was at working temperature but now the only indication is when the heating starts to work.

If anything the alerts tend to appear when things are full!
Overfill the oil or even put it to max and the car gets upset!
I understand coolant... But, you would spot the beginnings of coolant leaks on a weekly check. If there was going to be a coolant leak mid drive, it would probably be catastrophic failure of a hose or something that a 1l bottle of coolant wouldn't fix.

Many aftermarket head-up displays that connect to the OBD2 port have a coolant temperature readout. You also get the benefit of a much more legible speedometer.

It's a distance of approximately 720 miles with an average journey time of 12 1/2 hours (excludes stopping...and I'll probably "overnight" en route). Not sure on which route I'd take yet...

I'm putting the car through its annual (Volvo) service next month.

My questions are:

- what would you do or check before such a long journey?
- would you consider an "interim" service/ check-over by a garage before going?
- Or would you just get in the car and go?
- Do you think the journey (715 miles) would be achievable on a single tank?

Would welcome any thoughts!
I drove from Edinburgh to Northern France (Brittany) via ferry in summer 2019. Screwed the package holiday to Spain so we all jumped in the trusty XC70 and made it down.

We broke the journey down in 2. Drove to Bristol for a night over, then a relaxed drive in the morning to Plymouth.

Before setting off, tyres inflated, schoosers topped up, oil level the usual. Made sure I had the essentials in the car, spare fuses, small tool bag etc, space saver was good to go and bits and bobs. To be honest, my car had not long had a service from a Volvo dealer which comes with UK and European cover, so from that respect, covered for anything. And I had confidence in the car itself. The whole trip was flawless!

My last road trip in the p2 included a run through Inverness, the p2 was about 10k over a service and we jumped into it without even dipping the oil.
We done about 2k in it in 10 days and the only issue was the pads started scoring a few miles from home.
Moral is I'd do that run in one without looking at it
