After nearly 3 yrs of ownership I've sold the 960 saloon to the partner of one of my granddaughters. He had a Mondeo V6 estate which developed an engine problem after 236,000 miles so he got a cheap Corsa 1.4 automatic[and his insurance shot up]which he hated with a passion, this came up due its MoT and he didn't want to bother with that so was in need of a car and I finished up selling him the 960[and his insurance nearly halved]Not sure at present whether to replace the 960 with something else[not sure what that would be either]or just stick with my Omega and V70.

I suppose a lot depends whether you can live without a Swedish RWD saloon in your life. If you can't, a 940 or 960 saloon should be out there somewhere although if you've had a 960, i doubt you'd want to consider a 940. There's something about having that six-pot up front that gets under your skin.

Isn't it strange how insurance cost the chap twice as much for a car half the capacity of the 960 - presuming all other things were equal? I'll never understand how some companies arrive at their premiums - presumably they rely on statistics and risk assessments? Do those who drive Volvos have fewer accidents than those who drive Corsas, I wonder? As 'L.S.' suggested, I know which of the two I would prefer!

Regards, John.

Regards, John.
It's not so much Volvo drivers have fewer accidents John. It's more the case that Corsas are included in a group of what are percieved to be "boy racer cars". Popular with the teenage fraternity and also with car thieves, Corsas (and Clios, Fiestas and similar) are all heavily loaded by insurers because they are much more likely to be stolen, crashed or otherwise cause general problems for the insurers due to the majority of people who own/drive them.

Many moons ago i bought a Clio 1.2 so i could lay my Rover up to strip, inspect and potentially rebush the front end of it. Firstly the Clio broke down every day in some way, whether it was a blown wiper fuse (happened several times!) or a total FTP or something in between. Secondly, when it did run, it was so much slower than the Rover that i had to drive it harder to get anywhere on time. That meant the fuel economy was worse than the Rover (and it still took me longer to get anywhere!) and then it was also a lot more uncomfortable.
The insurance was nearly 3 times what i was paying on the Rover as well - so much for it being an "economical" car!
I sold it soon into my ownership, inspected the front suspension and bought the parts piecemeal and fitted them as needed to the Rover and called it good.

If an 18 year old new driver was trying to get insurance on a Volvo 940 they would be priced out of it. The reason young drivers buy a Corsa 1.0 is because it is in the lowest group so the cheapest to insure
