Default V70 P2 keys (again).

Apologies if this has been covered fully elsewhere. I'm interested in getting a third Key for my '04 170BHP auto.
I have two functioning key fobs.
I've seen a post from a member in London who said he got a key for, I think, £60. I haven't been able to raise them as yet (via PM), and the post is a few years old.

Timpsons tried very hard, but their support eventually confirmed that they couldn't do it.
Another place said 300 for a full key.

I would be more than happy with a 'service key' type of thing - A Basic key with encoded (or cloned) immobiliser chip, no need for the remote fob buttons. It's just a safety spare to keep in my wallet, which i don't intend to lose if I lose a main fob type of key.

Any suggestions/places etc welcome.

I'm aware that there is the expensive dealer route, for a new full key, very expensive, and slow?

Also, given how the fob's keyring wears (it came apart once), I have a new fleabay fob available to attempt a transfer of the guts. I asked a fob repair shop if they'd do it, they said there was a chance of cracking the glass chip, and said no guarantees! Has anyone done this operation please, and, if so, was the chip vulnerable or embedded in goo etc?
I have an analogue electronics background, but not confident with car stuff!
John.

PS. I also read of the idea of putting the chip from a functional key permanently near the ignition switch. I'd like to persist with the above service key approach first though...

Would also be interested in another key full key or full fob. The glass chip is dead easy to get out if you are careful. In my broken key it was glued in but if you scrape away with a needle it then pops out quite willingly.

Entire P2 keys, cut and programmed, are less than £300 from a dealer.

I was quoted £460 ex-VAT by Marshalls Volvo for a fob-key for mine a few months ago!

Needless to say, i'm content with just the one remote.

Default Fob replacement

Hi,

I took my 2 key fobs apart as the spring to flick the key out wasn't working which grew increasingly irritating.

They are a bit of a pain to do and require some patience to not crack the glass.

This is a pretty good description of the process:

I bought the blank keys off eBay for £6 each inc postage.

However I can't help for an entirely new key. :-(

£285 at Bells in Northampton just before christmas (I dropped my keys and for some reason, guessing the glass chip was damaged, it no longer started the car) so its worth trying a few different dealers for prices because like specilists and indies they all charge different amounts.

I got some specialist quotes cheaper, but it was a major faff with multiple journeys for blade cutting (I could dismantle the key and re use the old blade if it came to it) and then somewhere else for programming - with time and fuel it would have worked out more expensive. With Bells it was organised over the phone, emailed them a copy of my V5 tomprove ownership, then one quick visit for programming and a free pre winter check and top up of levels.

I also found some specialists quoting well over Bells price as well, which seemed totally unjustified with the running round then involved to get it working.

Default Thank you all for the above...

It look's increasingly like there isn't a magic key shop! Or one without silly prices. So. I'm thinking on a variation of the 'fix a chip to the ignition switch' bodge.

With my two functional two keys, I'll 'Re-fob' one of them with the failing key ring bit, to stop it coming off my key ring and being so easily lost.
The other full key I'll hide within the car, not sure where just yet.

And then have a 'blade' type basic key, or two, so that I can always get in to the car, and retrive the full key. A blade may or may not open the tailgate, so hiding underfloor near battery might or might not work.

I don't know if there is an internal boot release, or if the lock/unlock button on the window and mirror control panel would be operative, to open all doors, including the tailgate. I'll have to experiment once I have a blade.
This is similar to scheme I had with my second to last 940.
Now there is just the matter of getting a blade cut. I can provide a blank from an ebay fob if needed...

I appreciate that the alarm may go off when using a blade.

Another post avocated putting a '£50 reward and phone number' sticker on your key.
They said it worked well on two occasions...

John.

If mine is anything to go by, there is no tailgate release handle (i think they were only on the ones with the optional seats in the boot) but the tailgate does unlock with all the other doors when I press the unlock button inside. I'm pretty sure using a key would unlock everything anyway though

that said a) there's plenty of hiding places in the front anyway and b) old volvo's aren't exactly top of the list of most stolen cars aso it's more likely they'll break in to steal something especially if you leave stuff on show, actually taking the car is less likely

I suppose if i had to think of a well hidden but not obvious place, I might take off that strip on the lower side of the tunnel (down by your ankles) and tape / tie the key to something in there. it's only one plastic screw thing to undo it and slide it forwards you can do it with a 10p or something probably

if you don't have an undertray you could even tie it somewhere in the engine bay which is unknown to everyone else but laying on the floor and reaching up into there you could get it. maybe put in a sandwhich bag though so it doesn't get mucky

That would be too easy to find. Hiding it under a rock in the load area would be much more sensible!
