Default Fuel guage stopped reading

My '94 2.9 24v has never had a problem with the fuel guage before. The other day I filled with petrol twice. The first time the tank read about a third full, as it should have. Later the same day, I filled the tank to the brim for a long trip. To my dismay, the guage read empty and the warning light was on. I have not had a chance to investigate as I am not at home, but any ideas?

Thanks.

Give the instrument panel a couple of bangs, if it works again, its the earth, apparently the screws that hold the gauge get a layer of oxidisation on them, scrape clean and replace. Or it may be the sender, another job all together.
