I managed to crawl under mine without lifting the car when I had to replace the
clevis pin.

Either your car sits obscenely high (higher than normal) or you're much skinnier than i've been for the past few decades Mark!

Not as slim as i used to be Dave ( 11st 10lb when I was racing ) but I managed it fine. Think with 25 year old springs my car is probably sitting low

Last time i was anywhere near that weight Mark i was fairly seriously ill and had lost on average a stone a week for about 6-7 weeks.

The mystery illness went as quickly as it came (overnight in both cases!) and i started putting weight back on but more importantly, could actually eat food and drink coffee again!
Won't go in to the gory details because............... errrr......... they're gory!

Despite some medical tests a conclusion wasn't found although diverticulitis was suggested. I'm not going to explain it as it's gruesome but feel free to look it up.

Before that episode, the previous time i was a bit under that weight was when i was 16 and went for my medical before taking up my apprenticeship, was about 10st7 then but cycling a lot - not quite on your level but a lot for an amateur!

Must admit with autos I generally just put them in "P" unless on a slope in which case I also use the handbrake. The 960 is usually parked on a gentle slope outside my lock up garage.I can often reach quite a way under a car without jacking it up,but I'm built like a biro re-fill-never weighed more than 10st 2lbs in my life and still have a 28" waist.Anyway Monday I'll try the adjustment route first and see how it goes.
Thank you for all replies thus far and if any other thoughts occur feel free to keep them coming.

Adjustment sorted it and M.o.T. passed today.
I once went on a free trial drive with the IAM and when we got back to the start point I pulled on the handbrake while holding the button in,the instructor type told me this was incorrect and you shouldn't press the button when engaging the handbrake.

Congrats on the pass!

I'm glad it wasn't me in the IAM car - the instructor would have got the sharp edge of my tongue about wear in the ratchet which could cause the handbrake to self-release caused by not using the button when applying the handbrake! That and a few other things too!

It's equipped with a button for a reason, therefore use it!

I always thought it would wear the ratchet too and I still always press the button in when engaging the handbrake.Although the car failed on the h/b first time around[a bit of a disappointment]it was nevertheless pleasing that there were no other faults listed, not even any advisories. So although it's only covered 124,000 miles it's still a 25yr old car.

I was taught the complete opposite. Button in until handbrake on and lever in required position.
