Is the new gasket the same? I'd hazard a guess it's deliberately restrictive to improve warm up and general cooling by making it more even.

Default Friday night diesel fun.

Took time out today to paint some bit before they go back on.

I'm also collecting the cylinder head tomorrow so looking forward to it back.

Yes you could be right about that, it will be interesting to compare to the MLS gasket.

A nice drop of paint always improves the look of things!

Looks smashing. What did you use on the exhaust heat shields? High temperature engine paint?

Default Disaster

I got the car back together, timmed up right following Green book and it runs like a pig...🙄

Today double checked the timming and still bad.
Finally did a compression check and down on all cylinders to16.6 bar....new it should be 33 bar.

I'm not familiar enough with the VW engine to point you to the exact cause but i'd double check you've got the timing marks correct then double check the IP lift at the timed figure, usually about 8-10deg BTDC.

Sometimes the actual TDC mark is further on than it appears, you may have inadvertently timed it at 10deg BTDC or similar - that would give low compression and make it run like a sack of spanners.

Default Timming

Yes there are 2 makes on the flywheel a 1 and an 0. The tdc is the 0 and checked it when the head was off and it's in the green book.

I've had he head reconditioned and maybe....just maybe the reused the same shims again causing compression not to be where it should. They should of reshimmed with thinner shims after grinding the valves and seats.....I will measure the shim clearance tomorrow and fingers crossed!

Way over my head as to what to do next, but could I ask the thickness of the new hg as compared to the old? That could explain low compression in all cylinders. I recall seeing a table of recommended gasket thickness v piston height above block, which I will try to find.
MLS gaskets can be split if required.

Yes 100% rights that refers to if a bottom end rebuild takes place and piston height changes. I replaced mine with a 3 hole gasket as it was the same.

The valve clearance is out of specification.

As part of head refurbishment the shims were to be replaced with thinner ones. I've last night quickly "as it was raining" on cylinder 1 exhaust clearance and I was expecting 0.40 and it's more like 0.25.

Question is.....if the machine shop ground the valves and the seats but just used the old shims again would this cause the loss of compression?

I will check the other valve clearance and write down the results .
