I would go along the route of either good second hand carriers or new. Thread inserts are possible, but need a specialist machine shop to do successfully. Your life and that of others depends on your brakes, they need to be good.

Regarding thread inserts the common brand name is 'Helicoil' and you could get a kit to do it (dependent on thread size) from screwfix.

As others have suggested a recall to the garage that did the original work should be first step but in practice they will quite possibly deny responsibilty and then you've got to prove they did the damage, and in the mean time the car is of the road.

The "Helicoil" type of thread inserts can be fitted by anybody with a reasonable amount of mechanical ability and are at least as secure as the original thread.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Going back to the original garage is out of the question. Already tried that, it didn't go well. Let's just leave it at that.

Probably just end up buying a new set and selling the other good one. I was under the impression that they were unobtainable these days, gladly that doesn't seem to be the case.

This bloody car.

Just to clarify that link to skandix I posted earlier - that is for one carrier (they sell them individually).

If only one is damaged then just buy one. Try your local volvo dealer as they may end up being cheaper overall as, from my experience, skandix postage costs tend to be a lot.

Cheers mate, but I have this mental disorder where I always replace the same for both sides. It means my 850R is in good nick I suppose haha

Last time a rear light went out I replaced all four. See what I mean haha.
