Brakes
Hi,
I have a 2007 S80 2.4D. I'm wondering what the minimum thickness that front & rear brake discs should be before determining whether its okay to put new pads on with older discs, or whether to replace all parts. According to Euro Car Parts, my car has 16" brakes. The front brake pads seem to have plenty of wearing material on them, but the discs themselves seem to have a lip. The rear pads don't have as much material on them, but again, there's a lip on the discs. I know the brake pads are checked on an MOT, but are the thickness of the discs checked too? Euro Car Parts have a 50% sale on at the moment, so I can get decent brand parts like Pagid & Mintex for reasonable prices.

Min disk thickness should be in your handbook.
Mine states 23mm minium, xc70. Vented disks front and back. Generally I recon disks every third set of pads as if above min thickness when needed they will be well bellow min thickness before the pads are worn out. I am running mintex disks front and rear, less than half price compared to volvo.. Paul. |

Which section is the minimum brake disc thickness listed under? I've looked at my manual & all is tells me is how to use the electronic handbrake.

if they are lipped quite badly you may as well replace them & pads, new disks are pretty cheap considering.

It is possible I read it in the Haynes book but sure it was handbook. I even baught a cheap plastic micrometer from ebay to do the measuring, standard type micrometer or veniers will not work with the backplate on, no room for the micrometer head and the standard veniers will only read the thickest part the lip as they have parralel jaws. Cost about £3. Paul. |

It's definitely in the Hayne's manual. a general rule of thumb is two sets of pads and then change the discs. From what I remember the wear allowed is 2mm i.e 1mm per side so if it's anywhere near this I would change them.

I purchased a full set of Brembo from ECP £200 all in after discount. They have been excellent. Dont buy their own cheap brand.

I also have a full set of Brembo's from ECP and have been excellent so far and I've been towing my 4 berth caravan with them also.

disc thickness Q
If it shares anything in common with the P2 S60, they are
Front disc thickness New 26mm > wear limit 23mm (for 286 dia discs) New 28mm > wear limit 25mm (for 305 dia discs) |

I ordered the Pagid discs & pads (Front & back) earlier this morning. I made the most of the 50% discount & collected them this afternoon for £178 including VAT. Half price for decent parts... Hopefully they do the trick! Volvo's ones were very expensive in comparison, so I decided to go down the aftermarket route.
The replacement wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be though. The T50 bolt that holds the disc in place was just seized solid (I've only managed to work on the driver's side front wheel so far). There was no chance moving the torx bolt by hand, which you'd imagine would be how it should be removed - There's no need for these bolts to be tightened the way they are sometimes! Even with plenty of lubricant, a blowtorch, impact Torx sockets & a Milkwauee impact gun - It didn't budge! It had to be drilled out in the end, then used a "Tap & Die Set" for re-threading. Of course, the new discs didn't come with new T50 bolts either, so these are on order & I'll collect them tomorrow and continue the job. I should have asked for the new bolts whilst I was there collecting the parts today, but I didn't think removal of the existing ones would be such a big job to be honest. @green van man - Good point regarding the Vernier caliper tool not being able to get a reading with the dust shield in place. I was just looking at them with a view to buying one for future use, but looking at the picture, it won't fit behind the disc/dust shield to get a reading. Would you have a link to the one you bought, or a similar one by any chance?
