Weight of right foot is by far the biggest factor...

that said, I keep my trip on miles to empty most of the time... filling up at the end of the work week after my stop start, up and down hill, barely long enough to warm the engine up commute it’ll usually read about 250ish... hit the highway and cruise at 75-80 it will climb for about an hour, peaking around 420 or so before it starts to come back down again

I've just calculated my mpg at 37, when apparently it should be closer to 45. But I've only had the car a short time (since Christmas), and in that time it's been almost constantly sub zero round here. I also discovered that having filled it up when I bought it, I clearly forgot to put the fuel cap back on (previous car had the seal built into the flap, so force of habit and all) so all I have to go on is a few hundred miles in mostly sub zero temp, with no fuel cap on.

Performance seems fine, so I don't currently suspect any major faults.

Based on this, do we think 37 is OK when the official combined figure is 42 and browsing about tinterweb it seems most are getting around 45?
1/ Driver style, mostly as regards acceleration rates, use of brakes and gearbox. Never exceed 60 mph and keep the revs below 2500 when accelerating as turbo's are bad news in fuel economy terms.

2/ Tyre type and pressures, BUT be careful about cheaper "Go Green", or Eco tyres, as they often have bad braking distance figures on cold or wet roads in particular.

3/ Condition of fuel injector tips (I use LM Diesel Purge every 50K km).

4/ Engine and gearbox oil type and viscosity. Thin oils that contain a lot of Moly reduce friction, 0W30 in winter and 0 or 5W40 in summer (If practical for a diesel only).
0W30 all year for petrol jobs.
If you don't tow or use a big right boot on the go pedal, an 0W20 would be worth the risk in winter for a petrol job.
Don't forget to use the OEM spec oil IF the car is under warranty!

5/ Weight (Of the car, not the driver).

6/ Traffic avoidance.

7/ Use of electric engine pre heat systems.

8/ EGR, CAT and DPF cleanliness.

Obviously air density and wind effects make a difference, but like ring or valve seat wear, there is not much that can be done about such matters.

Below a certain speed [can't recall how fast]opening a window is more economical than having a/c on.Above that speed then the situation reverses. However having a window open at any speed adversely affects economy as does having anything electrical[radio/heated rear screen/air con/heater fan/whatever]switched on.Depends on how far you want to go to achieve economy.

The two things that have most affected my MPG in my four years of driving (my driving style hasn't changed and I'd like to think I drive smoothly) are the weight of the car and the outside temperature.

In my Corsa my MPG was about 50 during summer and 45 in winter. Since removing the rear seats and trim (roughly 50kg) that has changed to 55 and 50 respectively.

The van which has no modifications went from 57mpg in Summer to about 50.
