Listen up,
I have been away from the forum for some time due to work overload.
I run my own Volvo specialist workshop in Dorset (K5 automotive) for nearly 3 years after working for Volvo dealers and importers for 21 years in 4 countries. So first of don't think I am talking out of place.
I presently own Duett 210, P1800S, P1800ES, 245 GL, previously owned 244,344,345,744, 745, 765, 945,........etc.
I have subscribed here since 1999 (on and off)
But and its a big BUT, the forum has become boring, people concerned about putting the right messages in the right places, how fast they should or should not drive, should the running lights be on or off, blah, blah blah.
Would be nice to see people helping others a lot more with positive input.
Sorry, better shut up and go fix cars, better than talking rubbish like everyone else.

Karl (Volvo apprentice/mechanic/foreman/service manager/national service manager/garage owner)

I see a lot of helpful replies here. This is also a place for Volvo owners to discuss issues as well as ask technical questions. I think the forum covers a wide spectrum. As far as <putting the right messages in the right places>, that is to make them easier to find in relation to a model Volvo.

Input from people such as yourself is very important, and if you have answered some questions here then accept my thanks for that input.

I would have to agree with Bob. Telling people to put a message in the right place may seem unimportant and like nit-picking but the fact is, it is very important. Imagine you read a message about problem x and solution y in February, in July you experience the same problem. Now lets say you drive a 740 and the problem was regarding a 940 but it was in fact posted in the PV/120 for sales section by mistake. It does not take the brain of Britain to figure out that you will have to go through thousands of messages to find it.

It's like a book in a library. Stick a book on the Hundred Years War on the World War Two section and it is gone forever.

Hi,
I always thought that the ''GENERAL'' section was for open discussion about any Volvo or car related topic and was not specific to any model. I see many names who subscribe to the general topics also popping up in the model specific sections giving very good advice on a large variety of mechanical/electrical topics thus saving loads of cash for people who in some cases are not even members. Even if the topic cannot be answered at least most are pointed in the right direction. Yes some topics are inadverantly put in the wrong section but again I have also seen them moved ....at no cost!!! Lets put it simply for all concerned. My computer only logs onto this site if I want it to. I then choose what I want to read or reply to. If I dont like what is on any internet site I dont have to return to the site again. If I want a site to be interesting I have to input topics I feel may be relevent and then take any flack thereafter. There are many sections on this site that I dont have any input or real interest in. These are the sections I dont click on !!!! All I can say is that somewhere somebody spends a lot of time constructing and maintaining this site for the world ...yes the world , to access and aint that great. Cheers Nige

Yeah geat, it is great I agree.
I was, like I said, voicing an honest opinion.
High horses and all that aside, it is a great forum, there is a load of good information and genuinely good technical help in patches.
I am quite aware where my computer on/off switch is, I know how to access the web and what I like to view, that was not my point.
My point was exactly as I am doing, responding to such and creating more blah, blah, blah.......
When I access this forum I tend to spend hours reading most topics.
I will continue to access the site and answer questions on technical issues as best I can.
What I certainly wont do is add anymore to this topic.

Karl

If you do pick up this reply, thank you again for the input you give, it is important for the person you help and others who will benefit from your help. It also helps to make this forum a useful focal point for Volvo owners. There are many that only use certain sections of this forum, sections that are within that/those persons interest area. But I do think that a general discussion area has great value.

Karl,
As my old Grandmother used to say:- "If you cannot comment in a nice way, then, "KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT",
Kind Regards,

Best you do just that then.

I speak as I feel, it's obvious that you do the same.
Just maybe I am a little more polite and learned better manners from my grandmother.

Post in the right place agreed....BUT I'm recently new to this whole forum thing. Yes, having been 'hooked' for the last month, I realise that my first posts might have been naive, incorrectly sited etc etc. I am not a mechanic and use garages(main dealer/independants) because thats what they specialise in. I would love to be a techie but infact I just love my Volvo and reading all the posts especially in the 850 and Performance section, and contributing. Many topics such as lights on/off etc are cries for help because main dealers dont/wont tell you the answer for less than £60 p/h.

My points are:
1. Volvo are now attracting a younger buyer, myself included.
2. Speed IS interesting - why else did Volvo create the T5?
3. New members should not be 'crucified' for posting. They'll be driven away and may actually have valuable info to share.
4. Try to find another forum as welcoming, unpatronising, and with such a plethora of topics for more common cars like Golfs etc. I believe this will keep the second hand values of well maintained Volvos higher as even the most basic faults can be rectified.
5. Cars have changed - less servicable by owners, and have more electrical gear and computer power than the first space ships, hence topics will reflect these issues.
6. What is exciting/interesting for you??
7. Should there be a 'master' section for experts like yourself?
8. Having found this forum so useful I am now very likely to put my money in the pot and become a VOC paid up member.

N.B My family ran an Amazon Estate for 17 years to '85, MFX374H I think, bought in Cyprus and imported here 2 years later, an Amazon saloon '76-78, a 240DL '85-97, 940 Turbo '97-00, then I bought a 460 and then my 850 T5. Born and bred Volvo. Great site!!!

Kind regards
Chris
