Default Automotive Engineering Courses

I feel like i'm in a real rut here. I'm too old to take on a vehicle mechanics apprenticeship at 25 (or so i'm told) and couldn't live off the wages anyway with the financial commitments i currently have.

Most colleges that i have looked at only offer full time courses in automotive engineering and those evening courses that are available only cover basic vehicle maintenance. I'd really like to progress in this field but dont know which direction to take. Does anyone out there know of any part time certified courses available or any ways in which i can aquire the necessary knowledge/skills whilst keeping on full time work?????

thanks...

To old at 25 ...ye gods it doesnt leave much hope for the rest of us!!!
Seriously though. Motor mechanics is fairly easy once you get the fundementals as most cars have similar mechanical setups. Various makes have their quirks but in the main the mechanics dont change much. The electricals do however and with the way things are going its going to be plug and play. My advice to you would be to approach a back street garage. You know the sort...oil everywhere and a recepton with a big roller shutter door. Depending upon the time you have to spare I am sure that some of these guys would help you out by allowing you to watch, help out, make the tea etc. and get you started with the help of their expertise. I know some of the guys in these back streets and their knowledge beats anything else that an official course has to offer. I even know how to change a valve spring on a car without removing the cylinder head using a ball of string!!!!!!! Good luck. Cheers Nige
