I mean they must weigh similar right, did the newer engines make such a vast difference???

anyone got both cars they could compare them to each other?
As far as I understand the C30 used the Ford 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 naturally aspirated petrols plus the 2.3? Volvo T5. The earlier V40 had Ford 1.6 turbo T3 (150bhp) and T4 (180bhp) - the MPG on paper looks good but reality is mid 30s MPG so it's probably very similar to the C30 engines except the T5 would likely be mid 20s. Every time I've driven the newer Volvo 2 litre turbo V40s they've been mid 30s MPG too. For the V40 engines you might save more in tax rather than MPG

It's probably that the V40 D4 is better "optimised" for the MPG test - with stop/start etc. In the real world there is a difference, but nowhere near that much.

Wouldn't bother with an S. Given the age of these cars now an SE is unlikely to cost much more but is worth it for the extras. Either way, that one seems fairly pricey for what it is.

we have a c30 1.6drive in the household - my sons, and he has put 25000 miles on it in the last 2 years. Only expense (now at 80k miles) has been servicing, glow plugs, battery, and timing belt.l We bought it from an auction centre - one owner with fvsh and I think we paid 4k.

He says its more economical than his Micra he had before.

So I would have thought £3k would be achievable. The 2010 facelift ones I think are better.

Never driven a V40 I am afraid - as previous poster said - go drive both and make your own decision.
