2001 XC70 cranks but won't start
As title, my 2001 XC70 won't start today. Just cranks but refuses to start. Battery is fine.
Can anyone give me some idea where to look? I've scanned the car and I got a P1238 code. I have read that the crank position sensor could be at fault. By disconnecting it apparently the car should start? Is this true? I haven't had chance to have a good look at all this as it is absolutely hammering down. Will take a better look tomorrow with hopefully some ideas from you fine chaps. Would the fuel pump give a code of it was failing/failed? Any help will be much appreciated. TIA |

Engine definitely will not start with a disconnected crank position sensor.

It is the 2.4T petrol. 141000 miles. Was running good up until yesterday sometimes a little hard to start first thing in the mornings but it would always fire. Today just cranks but just won't catch 😔
My plan of action is to replace the fuel filter tomorrow and check the fuel pump relay under the dash. Im hoping it isn't the pump. Knowing my luck it probably is 😒🥴 |

Thanks for your replies guys. Ah good to know it won't start with the crank sensor disconnected.
Can the crank sensor cause a no crank condition such as this? No codes to go on apart from the P1238. |

Had a problem on my first D5 2002 model. The fuel pump in the tank was failing and the car cutting out and going into limp mode. Took me ages to work it out as it didn’t store a code once the ignition was turned off. It was there until turning it off, I took to keeping the diagnostic machine plugged it so I could see what was happening.
Assume the petrol cars have a fuel filter, can you take that off to see if fuel is flowing with the ignition on? Heard of a problem with a PEM module on petrols that can scupper them as well. Can’t remember what it stands for, but worth searching the forum. |
