Default Car in garage for a month

Hi all

My car was identified as having a small oil leak, but COVID stopped me getting it looked at. The car handled and performed fine with this issue.

Last month it went in for this to be rectified and a new rocker gasket was ordered and fitted. On driving home I noticed that the car was slow to accelerate. And after 4 miles the engine light came on. I rang my dealer who pointed me to Volvo assist.

Volvo assist came out the next day and identified the rocker gasket hadn’t quite been fitted properly (air had got in) and I had a slight fuel leak from an injector. They fixed the air issue but couldn’t do the injector. So back into the garage.

Garage rang me and identified that it was a turbo failure and they needed my car for 3 weeks. 🥺

The work should have been completed yesterday, but no one contacted me. I rang today and have been told that as they were installing the new turbo they noticed the rocker gasket also needs replacing. I told them this was done before and was the start of the issues. I will now not have had my car for a month which is really upsetting as I need a 7 seat car and am paying a lot a month for a car I don’t have.

The car is just a year old and I am so not impressed right now.

I notice you are in Northamptonshire. Is it Bells you are using? One of the sales guys from Bells posts on here a lot. Maybe he could help you to get some better service from service?

Update.

My car was in the garage in total for 7 weeks. When it was returned it lasted 3 weeks / <200 miles before it broke down at night on the way to our holiday leaving us stranded.

Volvo assist recovered the car, but this left us with all our luggage and my 3 small children sitting on our luggage/car seats in a service station car park for 2 hours whilst they tried to get a hire car so we could continue on holiday.

Thrifty and Enterprise couldn’t source a replacement vehicle able to hold us so we could continue to our hotel so we went home in a taxi. We missed the first day of our holiday and a days worth of paid for activities.

My local dealer had an xc90 ready the next day.. so the holiday resumed

Ended up being an exhaust sensor coming loose. But this caused the engine to heat up to a temp that made popping the engine catch almost impossible, and an overwhelming smell of burning. Also the Sound of the turbo spinning up was so loud we had to shout to be heard. It was a pretty scary experience and we were lucky not to have been on the smart motorway.

In about 60 weeks of ownership my xc90 has been in the garage 10 weeks so far. Might have to move away from Volvo even though my car is amazing when it works. Fingers crossed this is the last of my issues.

That is bad news. I hate smart motorways as well. Who is your dealer?

Could it have been the radiator cooling fan that was making the noise?

Given that there was a faulty exhaust sensor I wonder if the car might have been 'stuck' in a DPF regen (assuming you have a diesel?) as that causes significantly higher temperatures in the engine bay and so raises the fan speed for extra cooling.

It sounded like the turbo to me as it would make a very loud whoosh sound whenever I touched the accelerator. I have had a few turbo cars before with loud turbos. But this was far louder. The garage said it was exhaust gases making the sounds due to the sensor falling off.
