The ceramic replacements are available through the likes of ebay:~

Fortunately I have no problems on the 240 but I do rotate each fuse from time to time giving the ends a light coating of copper grease - making sure that the holder is compressing the fuse properly.
Watch for dampness in this area.

All possibilities exhausted, i'm now at picking up sledge hammer stage. All wires good, fuses clean, an where they fit. Relevant connectors wiggled. There's something i'm missing. The further suggestions from wiser , more patient heads. . . ?

Thank you, Voice of Reason. I know there has to be a findable fault, it's just the car has a waiting buyer, i've been trying to fix this for two weeks an there's another pain in bum job to do: the wire operating the wipers has jumped off it's track on one side. . . grrr. But as you say, no doubt all will be well.

Stephen. It was. I'm about to go check the connector between fuse 4 an relay, as mentioned in the thread u directed me to.

I am here now, to report success! It was one of those discounted items that should not have been discounted. What it was, is that someone had in the past, had the same prob an bypassed fuse 6 with a blade fuse, take power direct from battery with a fat wire onto positive batt connector. Now, while fault finding, it had been my habit to disconnect positive terminal, and, when going to start engine, just pushing it onto terminal without tightening, for ease of taking off again. So the pump bypass wire was not being tightened. . . My prob was that i had not realised this wire was what it was, it was only while tracing wires under dash, looking for the connector mentioned in thread (which didn't seem to be there), that i saw a suspiciously fat looking wire coming thru from engine bay, actual light-bulb moment.
