Default S60 Geartronic Fluid Change

Hi All,

My S60 is just coming up to 60,000 miles and have started noticing over the last few weeks that its started to slip a tad even when its warm.

I understand it does it when the box is cold but even after an hour or so, after it changes in to second if I then accelerate to pass someone etc. it feels like it slips (the revs rise slightly and then it "bites") although the car does still accelerate fine when it's doing this. I haven't noticed this in sport mode or manual mode though.

Would a fluid change help?

At 60k miles I'd be tempted to change it anyway. I changed mine at 55k.

There's some good guides on YouTube and I did a drop and refill method. You get just under 4 litres of oil out at a time of total 7 litres capacity. I did it 3 times so can almost say 87.5% of the oil has been changed.

Have a look at this video:

I didn't set the level at 50C, I carefully measured what came out and replaced the same amount though have recently found a mobile app called Car Scanner that does display gearbox oil temperature

Were Volvo* to specify fluid changes for this 'box, the first one would be due now. Get it changed.

*Like 'normal' manufacturers do...

Thanks for the replies.

I will probably get my main dealer to do it as there are some recalls to do as well.

What you are describing sounds like "partial slip" (also known as "modulated slip") and is expected behaviour on some models. When accelerating the TCM will allow the torque converter to slip for a second or so - the revs will rise by around 200-400 - the effect of this is to reduce turbo lag and give a sense of a more immediate response.

It isn't well documented but another Volvo added feature of this box I think.

Not withstanding that - still a good idea to get your fluid changed at 60k.

Local Volvo dealer Quoted £480 as it needs to be flushed multiple times and values reset etc. and plus they will do the 3 recalls that are outstanding at the moment (not including the seatbelt).

Car has main dealer history all the way through and not absolutely sure I trust a local garage to do the flush properly.....

Worth a call, perhaps?

I do know of wrights but I work behind the Volvo dealer so its convenient for me to drop it off and I get the recalls done at the same time.

Your call, of course, but just to note that even main dealers are susceptible to a haggle, based on another quote. They've got it anyway, because recall, so it's all gravy for them.

In any event, find out exactly how many flushes they propose to do, and will they be driving or running the car in between.

Our local Indy does this:

https://www.autosceneuk.co.uk/edt-au...m-horton-cars/

At significantly lower cost than your quote, as an example (better, cheaper, hmmmm).
