Default Indicator self cancel fail

Hi all,

Last week my 91 240 developed a nasty grating/grinding noise coming from the top of the column when turning. I was worried about bushes, knackard column etc when I realised my indicator had stopped self cancelling. I then realised this nasty noise from behind the steering wheel only occured when turning with the indicators on.

So, im guessing the self cancelling function for the indicators on the column has failed.

Anybody got any experience with this before i dig into tearing the cowling of the column off? How does the cancelling system work and what is likely to have failed?

Thanks
Graham
