Gearbox compatibility
Hi everyone advice again please! so looking at buying a replacement gearbox. Current box is an aw71 on a 2.3l engine. Replacement box is also an aw71 but came off a 2.0l engine. I am assuming this will replace my current box no problem...
Thanks in advance Luke |

Why are you looking at buying a replacement gearbox anyway? Usually they last forever if they're looked after!

Thanks for the info that's good to know! Well do you remember my humming/buzzing problem? Well it's still happening! I changed the water pump thought it cured it but it didnt I dropped the trans filter... it wasnt blocked. I bought a stethoscope still couldn't exactly locate is but pretty sure it was coming from the gearbox.
This noise has driven me more crazy during 2020 than covid! 🤣! Anyway a replacement has come up for sale just down the road from me at a good price. Basically I was planning to prepare for what I believe is the inevitable |

Also be aware that the AW71 also came in two versions, one with a hydraulic lockup and one without, if yours hasn't got lockup then no problem but if yours does and the replacement doesn't you loose a valuable 5th "gear".

There was also a third version of the AW71, the LE but i think that was only fitted to the late Motronics equipped cars. This featured electronic controls/links with the engine management ECU so the timing could be slightly retarded for smoother gearchanges, the possibility of using lock-up on deceleration for enhanced engine braking and so on. I don't know if the 9xx has or uses these features but i do know they're available on some boxes in general and are very effective on them.
