In addition to the normal checks (Service history, HPI, etc) I would check the condition of the tyres, brake discs and pads.

On the test drive I would make sure all the electrics work as they should too.

For £20K you will be able to get the post 2007 facelift variant that has a lot of the initial flaws sorted, such as wheel bearings and AWD system.

I have just put a deposit down on an MY07 SE Lux for slightly less than your budget, but if you are not bothered with the Lux extras you should be able to get an 08/58 SE model with decent mileage. I believe it is May 08 when the XC90 emissions were tweaked to fall into the lower tax bracket which may be of interest to you.

Good luck,

Jim.

For £20k the world is your oyster!
I bought a 2004 model last year for just over £9000.
They are great cars. The post 2007 ones have better engine and gearbox, but even the 163bhp in mine is a nice drive.
Check the handbrake works, check the car pulls straight.
Other than that, all the normal checks... body panel alingment, funny mismatched tyres etc etc.

Also based in Leeds.
