Xc70 mpg
I have a 1998 V70 XC AWD. I have towed our caravan over the mountains in the Massif Central, France. I found that I was doing about 20 miles to the gallon. I returned just a little bit more mpg if I kept the speed to just below 50mph, but that makes for a long journey.

Sitting at 60mph on the motorway - with an 1800KG trailer - the D5 (210PS) was returning about 30-33mpg.
That figure plummets in town - and on any road where you can't maintain a steady cruise |

I have a 2007 new model D5 auto XC70 towing 1560 KG, don`t go over 50mph, with a very light foot, only get about 17 mpg,but still a good towcar. If yours is new model detachable towbar, watch out for movement between detachable bar & receiver, I had 3mm of play on mine after only 1500 miles, Volvo was`nt interested, stating up to 8mm play is acceptable, had to contact independant towbar specialist who arranged with manufacturer Brink, to supply & fit a complete new towbar, so much for Volvo afterservice.

Waterglen - your fuel consumption sounds very bad. The racecar is hardly aerodynamic now light - and the V70 tows superbly - and with brutal acceleration - it can still have old people in Micras away from the lights

My last car was an Audi 2.5 tdi Quatro, towing the same caravan, I averaged 25 mpg towing the same caravan and I drove at 60 when allowed, so am extremely dissapointed with the mpg as I expected better with the Volvo, I won`t buy another, or recommend one.
