i would be interested to know just what you have found needing to be replaced now that you have got the head off.

Are you replacing just one rod or the lot, how are the valves and seats, rings and bores ?

You can do a fair bit from where you are now, but it really depends on how much you want to spend.

Also,in what condition is the turbo?

Not a mod but would it be worth replacing the tappets?

How about polishing and porting?

Regards

Andy

Are you renewing the shell bearings that fit in the rods or using the old ones?
Did you decide on just the rods rather than pistons and rods? Was that price correct that you quoted for rods and pistons ie the pistons were only about £50 more?
With the head off I'd carefully check, clean and where necessary replace any pipes etc associated with the breather system.

2 of the rods are bent, so changing all 5, pistons, rings and bearing are all like brand new, so no need to change anything else, also changed all 20 followers (tappets)before stripping enigne thinking it was one of them, rods and pistons were only a few £ more but it was £100 just for rings, so just the rods it is, someone told me about taking the standard dump vale off the turbo and replacing it with a blankin plate as I have a dump valve fitted to the car. an idea's anyone?

Damien,

While you have the head off it is worth replacing the standard recirculating valve on the turbo with a blanking plate...using the small hose that was on that valve to operate your dump valve. That is the correct way to do it...if you leave that valve 'open' and not being used, the diaphram in it will eventually split...may already have done so.

Also, well worth checking that your turbo is in good order..if it is shagged, then best deals are 'exchange' from a Volvo dealer: you can allways order a larger one from a later model at the same price. With a larger turbo you do have to be sure that the increase in pressure that will be available is within safe limits throughout the rev.range.

Some later turbos need a change in downpipe to fit the different exhaust arrangement. These later turbos have a different exhaust side casting which turns the gasses before they enter the downpipe.

Don.Norchi.

How about balancing & polishing all the rods so they are identical. Matching the inlet ports to the manifold and smoothing out all the rough casting marks ditto the exhaust side.
