Default Engine Type and Number

Hi folks,

I have recently joined the VOC and am filling in the register details. I am currently trying to find my engine type and number. Now, I know that it is displayed on the cam cover, but my problem is that I had a replacement (secondhand) engine fitted about three years ago. I don't know if the cam cover is from my old engine or from the replacement one. Is the engine number and type displayed anywhere else, on the block for instance?

Must be a simple answer, but B*****ed if I can find it!

Thanks

Hi Philip, your engine spec should be B5234T3, that is a 5 cylinder, 2.3 litre turbo (T5 engine). There should be a label on the l/h timing belt plastic cover in the engine bay, however it could have fallen off over the miles. Many people get confused with the T3 designation - it is a of course a T5 engine!

and if you want to break down the engine codes.

B=Petrol
D=Diabolical ( Diesel )
first Digit is the number of cylinders
next two digits is the displacement in Liters
last digit the valves per cylinder
T = Turbo
S = Naturaly Aspirated.

so the T5 engines are the

B 5 23 4 T

As I understand ther are two versions of this engine.

Dont have a clue how you tell them appart.

Yes, that is what it says on the engine cam belt cover, the cam cover sticker says that it is a T3 engine, but seeing as I was told the engine that was fitted was from a late plate 850, could the actual engine be a T2?

As I understand, the various early versions of the B5234T engine differ in their internal strength only and that they would be interchangable with all ECU's. I do not know that the cam cover was not switched, so how do know for certain what the engine is and what the number is?

Thanks
