Default mpg and co2 comparison

I've got a 1995 940 manual estate which has done 174k and although it could probably keep on going (we've had it for 11 years) it's getting on a bit.

The logical replacement is a V70 but I'm having trouble deciding between the 2.0 and the 2.4d. I haven't got round to test driving either version of the car but fuel efficiency is stated as being virtually identical alongside carbon emissions- how comes this is the case?

CO2 production is closely correlated to the amount of fuel burned - big surprise.

The latest 2.4D has just been released and is considered the most upto date engine in the Volvo range - the 2.0D isn't.

Technology and design moves on - and which each generation comes better performance and economy.

The soon to arrive DRIVe version of the V70 offers (on paper at least) excellent mpg (57.6) and CO2 (129g.km) !

I guess there's a lot of people holding their breath to see how it drives ... I think Autocar are doing a brief test this week.

Thanks,

Does anyone know if a new 2.0 engine is on the cards anytime soon?

Regards

Don't know about time scale, but 2.0D is probably the next one to be tweaked, I've recently ordered a MY10 2.0D, certainly no mention of any engine mods on it.

The next new motor to hit the roads will be the 1.6D DRIVe in the V70, I wouldn't be surprised to find that feedback from that influences the development of the 2.0D

Hi Dazzle - how many miles roughly before it improved/what did it start at? My 2.0d RD (2010MY) is due 8th Sept and I'll be keeping a close eye on the consumption - my test drive car reported 42mpg average on the computer over the 300 miles I drove it with only 3000 miles on the clock but the actual seemed better than that as the fuel gauge showed fuller than when I picked it up after putting 300/42/.22 = 32.5L in it so I guess it was actually doing about 45mpg. I'll be happy with that as its better than my current 2.0d Audi A6!

Ive now hit 8k in mine

and to be fair i dont drive like i stole it but you can see easily I dont own it by the way i drive

Im heavy off the lights and sit around 80-90 minimum on motorways at night a little higher

My MPG now is around 45+ to be fair, when i first got his car best I got was high 30s

Without a doubt the engine is much looser and not as restricted, a hard pull from light can if you want create a wheelspin and get alarms up on the dash where a few weeks ago this wasnt an option

I uses a workmates car identical to mine but with 10K on it and i was getting a shown 50MPG over a 500 mile round trip id say 350 of these miles were motorway without hold ups

Its definately getting much better now its got some miles on
I have noticed though and Volvo say its fine shirt periods of a lot of black smoke belching from exhaust
On one occasion i was in tow after exiting a mtorway and attracted a police car who thought id mis fueled it
only for a minute or so but you will see it trust me when it happens all our company cars do it
