Default Oil filter Torque wrench setting

On my 2011 v70 d5 205 there is stamped on the oil filter housing the legend "25nm +5". Is this +5nm or +5 degrees? And if it is + 5nm why does it just simply say "30nm" and have done with? The reason I ask is that on a recent oil change I tightened the filter to 25nm and I was getting a small oil leak from the housing. I then tightened slightly to 28nm and the leak has stopped - almost. I am now getting a slight misting over the course of a couple of hundred miles but no apparent dripping. But it isn't bone dry. I am a little reluctant to give it the full 30nm because the construction of the thing seems to be rather flimsy,( no where near the quality of oil filter housing on my previous v70 p2) and I don't want to strip the thread or crack the housing. For the record I fitted a genuine Volvo branded filter and changed the internal seal that was provided with it. I noted another seal on the outer thread of the housing but as it is not in the kit I assumed it doesn't need changing.

Any wisdom on this would be appreciated. Just had a new alternator fitted and I don't want it damaged by an oil leak! Been doing oil changes for over 30 years on all manner of cars and as far as I can remember this is the first one to give me problems.

My xc60 has a 175hp D5 engine and when I changed the oil filter I noticed that the seal was a chamfered type and not a round type that was with the filter. I used the old chamfered seal until I did the next yearly change, when I made sure I had the chamfered one. Maybe yours is similar.

25 Nm is fine.
Make sure the seal is correct and make sure it's sitting in the correct groove.
Also lubricate the seal and the threads with clean oil to avoid the seal pinching or snagging as it winds in.

Thanks guys. The seal in the cap is the chamfered one. So was the one with the new filter. I replaced it with the lift out tab in exactly the same place as the old one that came out. However I didn't lubricate the threads on the outside of the base. Perhaps I will order both seals and replace them again and see what happens.

BTW I asked my local dealer to look at the weep when they changed the alternator. They didn't seem to think there was a problem!!

You might find the weep is dripping down from the air intake pipe above the oil filter , there is a breather union in the air pipe and you will probably find it is loose when you press it . a hose clip will sort it out .
