I had LPG on a Citroen C5 for a couple of years. The car came with it and was very cheap. The main pro was the price of fuel really. They also get a slightly easier emissions test at MOT time, or did then, but that's not necessarily a good thing.

The downsides have mostly been covered.

The tank normally goes in the spare wheel well, which means you have to have a spare wheel rolling around the boot or carry a can of foam.

You lose a little bit of performance and economy. Not too much, but if the car's performance was marginal on petrol (like my 1.8 litre C5) it might cross the line to being unacceptable.

You're fitting a load of wires and pipes etc. that aren't meant to be there, that can make things untidy, and make routine maintenance more difficult. The C5 had a rigid pipe running behind the headlight in just the right position to stop you changing a bulb easily. Because the C5 used H7 bulbs that meant the front bumper was off a lot.

You always have to consider where your next filling station is. I had an Android application called FillLPG that was quite useful. My experience is that up to 25% of LPG pumps won't be working, which can be an issue in the wilds. I never did have to resort to running on petrol.

While I was running the C5 on LPG my wife had one running on diesel. I was getting 25mpg, the diesel one was doing about 45mpg. By the time you factor in the petrol used in warming up (it ran on petrol for a few minutes from cold) they cost about the same to run.

I would consider using LPG again if I was doing a lot of miles, but I'd choose the base car carefully.

Richard TD, so at 25mpg it is like 50mpg as it's half price. Really its better sticking to a diesel, as that is what the car had from the factory, less hassle. My 850 TDI will do around 50 mpg as an average I'd driven sensibly.

Mad isn’t it really.

The only avid supporters are those that sell the kits!

Will the road tax be reduced in view of the lower emissions?

Actually you get MORE range. 200 miles or thereabout plus a full tank of unleaded. If you keep the car for a long time, it does not really matter about having a high mileage as you will eventually get your money back. It costs me about 13p per mile dependant on gas price which is equivalent to Diesel economy with T5 performance. Power is very slightly down but only just noticeable. If I want to see someone off, I switch to super unleaded then back to gas. If your car is properly tuned then it will make little difference. Other pros, is it walks through the MOT emmisions test. Had mine today, CO limit is 3.5% my car read 0.22%. HC limit is 1200 ppm my car read 128ppm, so I am also doing my bit for the environment. The oil remains cleaner for longer too.

Okay so the cons. Some already mentioned, such as I have a couple of cans of tyreweld in the car. Not needed so far but fingers crossed. It does make engine access a bit more cramped but I work around it. Servicing needs a specialist unless you do it yourself. ( Youtube is your friend). Filling up, you need to plan but you always have that tank of unleaded as well. No recognition by DVLA or government so no reduced road tax and no recognition of ULEZ. ( Letter to MP inbound).

My conversion was done by a specialist in Alresford and uses a BRC Sequent 56 system. I am very happy with it.

Default lpg

ive never had a problem with the spare in the boot -the volvo load carrying capacity in the estates is huge anyway, could use a spacesaver if you prefer.
never had my management light come on either - it always comes on when the ignition switch is first turned, when the bulb test is done with all the other warning lamps.then goes off immediately as it should do.
have had a starting issue that was harder to diagnose due to having an lpg system installed - was a split vapouriser diaphram ,but i like to do my own maintenance so that was just a learning curve !
if you want to run an old thirsty volvo estate ,then lpg may be the prefered option.
i really like my old 850 t5 estate, comfy, plenty of load space ,plenty of bhp and not too bad running costs
